Barcelona

Ooooooo. Each to their own :stunned:

Sorry, Paul - not sure if she's a mum & so would obviously be off your 'radar' if not...:D

Cheers guys, I'll check her out on Spotify. Like a bit of C/W :)

:offtopic:I know, but have you ever heard any of The Handsome Family's stuff, Paul? They use a C/W style but with a kind of 'Gothic noir' take on it. Renee Sparks' lyrics are really dark and funny at the same time...:soapbox:

Oi!!!

:hijack:

Sorry, BB not sure Lucinda or Jeff are my kind of musical taste! Cheers for the heads up though.

Thanks all for the input both this week & back in March, I'll make some notes to take with me!

Glasgow, be advised that security is unfortunately an issue anywhere in Barcelona these days.My wife's just done her good deed for the day in phoning up a lucky punter to return her wallet which she found when she was putting the rubbish out(usually my job).
It contained about 15 major credit cards,DNI(Spanish ID card)and driving license. No cash of course.Thursday is market day in Sant Cugat(supposedly the Hampstead of Barcelona)and this woman's wallet and purse had been stolden from her handbag an hour before when she was out walking with her three kids in town. The hassle she's saved replacing that stuff has to be experienced to be believed.

Cheers, I remember that from last time. One of our party almost got pickpocketed when drunk on the Underground and then somebody else almost got their passport nicked heading back over to the central bus station before we headed back up to Girona.

I'll apply my dummy thief wallet technique (e.g. expired cards & a €5 note)...

One final tip.See if you can pick up a July copy of The Metropolitan which is a free monthly listings guide (in English).Packed full of bars, restaurants and what's on stuff.
Or you can pick up a good 10 euro pullout guide with maps of the different "barrios" at the FNAC bookstore in Plaza Catalunya.Just next door to the Zurich bar which my brother Shrimpero mentioned above.

I was in Barcelona a couple of weeks back for a conference. Three people that I know of were mugged. It seems to me the problems have only got worse not better. My highlight of the conference was having a meal in a restaurant near the Gothic Cathedral. Standing outside in a courtyard having a champers reception with security guards keeping the winos, gluesniffers and junkies at bay.

The Olympic Port has some great bars and clubs, recommended for at least one night out..

Wish I'd met him in Cornwall last month now to have got more ideas in person (over a pint or 5 of Tribute!!!)

We'll make up for it another time, Rich!* Hope you have a good time out there, matey...that dummy wallet technique is a good one, used to use it at Notting Hill during the 'steaming' days of the '80s.

*will pm you about games I'm hoping to make in the near future...

You used that at the Spread on Good Friday, I had to buy all the beers. ;):whistling:

Thanks again to everybody for their thoughts.
Had a great few days away. Took in far more this time than my previous stag weekend experience, the new extended bus tour is an amazing way to see such a large city.

The Nou Camp wasn't as good the 2nd time around, although this wasn't helped by the fact it was 25mins to queue for tour tickets & then another 35 minutes to queue for a rather pointless 5minute 3D film at the start of the tour (the pitch was being relaid too so they only let you into the bottom tier and not the dugouts).

Found some gems of bars/restaurants tucked away in the Barri Gotic and didn't find it as expensive as Majorca seemed last summer. There seemed a fair few people who had combined their city break with going to Benicassim as well and got talking to a decent Stoke fan and his Mrs in some indie bar - we ended up staying until they chucked us out at 3am. I rarely get hangovers but was certainly struggling in 35 degree heat the next day.

Didn't really see any crime issues either, but we put that down to us being fairly city savvie anyway!

Hi everyone,

Me and the new Mrs Irish Shrimper are off to Barcelona for honeymoon on the 17th of this month. Being the lovely husband I am, I've gone through some footie fixtures for us to possibly attend whilst over there - and a tasty fixture of Barcelona v Man City is there on Wednesday the 19th at 10pm.

Just wondering however, as I can't recall from the last time I was there, what time does their metro system shut up at night? We're staying somewhere on the diagonal, and a late night walk in a place we don't know wouldn't go down well with my other half...

All help much appreciated :)

Metro operating hours

Monday-Thursday 05:00 - 24:00
Sunday & holiday 05:00 - 24:00
Friday 05:00 - 02:00
Saturday: Doesn't stop!

Better than the bloody Underground!

IS,
You can't rely on catching a metro train after midnight in midweek though you might just make the last one.
Otherwise there are plenty of late night buses and a taxi to "somewhere on the Diagonal" won't exactly break the bank:-)
