Barcelona

Sorry, Glasgow, couldn't find hotel details of the place I stayed in, though it was a bit of a walk to the nearest metro. I'm pretty sure the site I booked it through was expedia.com. Also, Ryan Air had some useful hotel links- stayed in a brilliant place near the airport at Girona thro' their links, and I recall they had pages on Barca too. Be sure to check out Sitges whilst you're there- about 20 mins by train, to the seaside- as you may need a bit of respite from the city heat & humidity at that time of year...

Booked the Barcelona Universal last night, (hotel AS mentioned earlier), 4 nights for just over €400, even better considering we got that deal on one of the top floor suites.

Thanks again for all the recommendations.

Cannot wait - 18 weeks & counting...

Glad to have been of service Rich

Going next Monday - anybody got any last minute tips of decent bars/restaurants?

Had a nightmare with our original hotel booking (their offer lost a considerable amount in translation e.g. the price quoted was per night, not for 4 consecutive nights) but thankfully we found an even better deal on the H10 hotel that was our original preferred choice as it's exactly where I wanted to be in the city (plus it's got a lovely roof terrace for the Mrs to sunbathe on!)

I went there about 5 years ago.

My tip, when eating and drinking is to avoid the tourist places, eat and drink with the locals, it's alot cheaper and nicer.

Get a metro card for traveling around, the underground system is very good.

Visit the old cathedral as well as the new one as it is stunning.

Avoid the Rhamblers at night, don't take cards out and only the cash you need.

Do the cable car as it takes you to the olympic stadium and saves the walk up the hill.

Do all the guadi stuff, it's worth it.

Unless you like big black prostitutes grabbing your balls.

That reminds me of a lads holiday in Tenerife when some of us were assailed by a load of African prostitutes.

"Why don't you want to **** me?" they shouted.

Ooh, I don't know, take a wild guess...

Barcelona is cracking, hope you have a good time Glasgow. The Maritime Museum (as well as things mentioned above) is worth checking out.

It may sound a bit naff, but the tourist buses are quite useful. The heat could be really hard work at this time of year, so the bus will give you some respite and still take you to all the main places, including Parc Guell and Tibidabo, two of my favourite spots. They take three routes around the city and you can hop on & off as much as you like. The best deal is to get a two day ticket (which is valid over a three day period, so you don't have to spend two consecutive days 'on the buses') and the main ticket office is at the Plaza de Catalunya. Opposite there is the 'Cafe Zurich,' a place I've been using for over 30 years now, where you can watch the world go by and plan your next move.

I'll steer my bro' Barna Blue towards this as he's lived there since 1978 and he'll be able to tell you a lot more than me...

Have a good one mate and if you fancy a bit of beach-time while you're there get a train to Sitges. 20 minute journey from Estacio de Sants.

Not an accom tip but would really recommed a trip to the Olympic village. Its a bit out the way but really worth a trip and there are some excellent photo ops there.

La Ramblas is good during the day but I didnt like it at night. Would also avoid the harbour area at night as it was full of Africans looking to sell you drugs.

Yes - there's a fantastic fruit market about half-way down which is great to wander around, and there's also the magnificent Escribà:

...which is a must-do for both fans of Art-Deco (almost Arts & Crafts) architecture and also for fans of cakes & chocolate (so that's a yes on both counts, for me).

:)
