Australia-best place to live?

Spent a good few months there back in 99/00 and I'd be over there like a shot if it were possible, but due to family ties it ain't gonna happen.

However the only thing that puts me off somewhat is the quality of their TV - it's truly, truly awful. I guess your average Aussie has more of an outdoor life rather than watching the box.

Australia would be bottom of the list of countries I'd want to emigrate to.

It's really, really dull.

After the Sydney Opera House the most famous thing is Ayers Rock. Ayers Rock is just a big rock, famous because that's all there is to see in Australia.

When you've got a whole continent and your second most interesting thing is a rock you know you're in difficulties. Is it any surprise that most Australians of an age where they can escape can be found serving behind bars in London? Well, that and their cultural heritage, which means they are use to serving behind bars, I suppose. No wonder MK spent his time out there watching TV. It's a country so dull I expect someone to bring out the "it's a good place to raise kids" argument.

Seriously, it's for people who find the desert of UAE too exciting. The most depressing thing about Britain is the poverty of ambition that means people think that Australia is something to somehow aspire to, as if the life in Ramsey Street is somehow the pinnacle because some bright spark at the Australian tourist institute had the common sense to tell them not to film Neighbours when it's raining. I suppose I should expect poverty of ambition as it is the Grauniad.

Now don't get me wrong, I was out there for a couple of months and had a great time, but by the same measure I've also enjoyed Northern away days at grim places like Accrington, Bury, Halifax, Macclesfield, Hartlepool etc and you wouldn't want to live there out of choice either. And these places even have better beer and marginally less racism than Australia!

Trust me, seeing kangaroos is cool but the novelty wears off quickly. One day of chasing them around in a ute is enough. It's not even as if they (Australians rather than Kangaroos) can play cricket any more. And if you beat them in any sport - a near enough daily occurrence these days - they refuse to speak to you.

I have been to Australia a few times and it is a truly superb place to visit, I am not wholly convinced I would want to be there full time but would have loved to have had the opportunity and ability to have gone and given it a go 35 years ago.

Are the full results available anywhere ? Would love to know where HK comes. Everything ticks the box here apart from pollution on two levels. One when the wind blows in the wrong direction from South China and 2 from the traffic. Fuel emission rules are nowhere near as strict as Europe and it shows. Interstingly life expectancy is high but I suspect next generation will see that decline. Other than that the only other downside is no SUFC at least until we get into te prem, at which point I could watch every game live.

Still not been to OZ yet. It's on the list to do from a business perspective but it doesn't fill me with wonder despite Cricko's VERY convincing argument.

You'll need a very high life expectancy for that :smile:

If i were to emigrate anywhere it would be to an English speaking country so Oz or the US. Have family down under who are very happy there.

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Wow, amazing debating skills dude.

Wasn't it Wilde himself who once remarked? 'I have nothing to declare but my Smiley's.'

Off you trot to Wikipedia then to find some pithy remark to counter with.
