Andy Murray...

Crikey, forgot about this.

What a match! Think he's just closed out his serve to take it in the fifth coming from two sets down. Just a tiny bit annoyed I missed that

Jammy git managed to win in 5. 6-7 (5-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 6-3.

Hardly jammy - it was testament to the physical fitness work that he has put in and his uncomprimising attitude. Two years ago, Murray would've been out on his legs like Melzer was in the fourth and fifth sets, but he's worked hard at maintaining his fitness levels so that it simply wasn't an issue. Whether going to five sets in the third round comes back to bite him in the latter stages (providing he comes through his next couple of matches) is open to debate.

He's obviously been working his nuts off on his physique and is now reaping the benefits. Not looking as convincing so far in the tournament as he was a few weeks back in Cincinatti but hopefully that will come. Playing again on Monday against the Swiss No.2 whoever that is. Lets hope he can up his game a bit more and win in 3 sets this time!

On a side issue, why is it that alot of people cannot stand him and refuse to support him? I hope its not because of the comment he made when he was just 18 years old. We've all said stuff and moved on so lets all back him as he is BRITAINS only real chance of winning one of the major tournaments. The Americans seem to love him and the way he is on the court, so lets all get behind him

The Yanks love him because he just bashes it back as hard and as deep as he can. Must've watched Wimbledon (the film).

But he doesn't bash it back as hard as he can. Far from it from what i can see. Murrays game is all about keeping the ball in play and forcing the opponent to make mistakes, just like Federer has done for the last few years. Maybe the yanks seem to love him for his work ethic and tenacity?

I thought he had Stanislas Wawrinka in the next round who I've always presumed to be Polish.

Ok, so he's apparently Swiss then and more significantly for Murray he's the 10th seed. Time to raise the game.

Still doesn't change the fact he is an arrogant prick. I hope he loses his next match. He is not English he is not British he is Scottish remember that!!

I was in the pro-Murray camp before the Olympics, and I can't believe he didn't think this was an ideal opportunity to right some wrongs. Even if didn't get a medal, a good battling run would have been ideal and would have been great PR for him.

But no, like the Davis Cup it showed that all he cares about is Andy Murray - not Britain and probably not even Scotland. Even his brother lambasted him in the doubles.

Well, that was never a good start PR-wise,

but that is also the reason why I can't stand him - wants all the backing of the British supporters and media, but then gives nothing back. All he seems to care about is himself, and that is an attitude that I can't stand.

Anyway...the question is, having stayed up to see what we'd do before the deadline, can I now be bothered to sacrifice even more time to watching Andy Murray later tonight?

Very impressive result. I don't think it's changed much in terms of his position as a contender but it's results like this that will cement his position as a top five player if he can win as ruthlessly as this. In fact, given that he's just played the tenth seed and been pushed so much earlier in the tournament, getting the form player on tour signifies the next step in a difficult draw for him.

Only Nadal up next if he overcomes Del Potro. Seems silly to say it but I think that game could be very significant in determining whether he becomes a strong performer who flirts with the top 5 or a player capable of taking titles off of Nadal/Fed/Djokovic. Just the one scalp in this respect so far. Nadal will show him how far he has to go.

Spot on. He confesses to being a "typical Scot" and infers he hates the English and wouldn't support an English team yet he wants all the support and sponorship we can throw at him. All that "he was only 18" stuff doesn't wash - he's older now and STILL a jumped up arrogant little **** with no manners and zero social skills. Support him if you want to but personally I don't feel like he's representing me, quite the opposite really. I hope he gets done 6-0 6-0 6-0 - now that would be a great result!

I try to like him but find it really hard to. Certainly him being Scottish has no effect on me as Im a fan of British sport..and further I always used to want Rusedski to win as he seemed amiable and had a bit of charisma despite being not in any way British.....likewise Kevin Pieterson in cricket.

WestRoad summed it up perfectly....he offers nothing to the British public yet expects support in return. Minimal effort when representing Britain in the Davis Cup / Olympics, states the US Open is his favourate tournament etc etc. I find all his histrionics a tad embarrassing as he is clearly a bit of a **** with a face I want to punch.

Its strange as Britain is crying out for a leading light in tennis, yet I feel rather detached watching Murray and whilst not neccessarily wanting him to lose, I have no great urge to see him win. Shame as his tennis is clearly superb and with a bit of PR work and personality training he could be great for British tennis.

And you follow football because....?

I think I'm starting to become a bit of a broken record on Murray so I'll try my best to refrain from leaping to his defence.

However, he's right on top of this match, two sets up and 0-30 up on Del Potro's serve and he's played with enough variety to completely throw Del Potro off of his game. I don't think Murray has played his best but in this match he has stopped Del Potro from playing his best and piled doubt on to him. His tie breaks have been exemplary - aggression from the start seizing the advantage and breaking the other player's spirit. Reminded me a bit of the way Federer used to play tie breaks (even at Wimbledon against Nadal his tie-breaks were all that kept him in the final).

Del Potro's still plugging away and really should have taken more chances than he has done but solid from Murray with occasional excellence.

He will have to raise his aggression should he get through and face Nadal but so far he's conserving his energy superbly. Hopefully Nadal will be taken to 4 or 5 and then the semi could be more interesting.

Murray is a W anker & will be wearing a Croatia AGAIN next week. I wish him nothing but a Henman-like career, if not worse.

I am English, not British, but had nothing but admiration for the non-English medal winners in the "less fashionable sports" in the Olympics. These people, Hoy especially, kept training & try without the "glory" or publicity that cocks like Murray attract.

I'm hoping these two have a punch up afterwards, as Murrays oppo slagged off his mum!!
