Andrew Murray

Quote[/b] (Xàbia Shrimper @ June 27 2006,16:59)]Tennis is indeed a load of old b******s and, much like Formula 1 and cricket, I couldn't give a flying toss who wins. (I was no doubt in the minority when England won the Ashes; I really just couldn't give a monkey's!) If Murray wins Wimbledon (which is highly, highly unlikely) he would become even more unbearable so there is an even bigger excuse not to like tennis!!
Well, hopefully Roddick'll do him over in the 3rd round, (or whoever he's got in the second) - That gimp he was playing today did us no favourts did he?

I find it quite comical reading through some of those comments however, I think lowering myself to his (and Scottish in general) sorry level quite wrong. Lets face it, he meant it and he is immensely envious of everything us English are and the Scots are not. That itself is satisfying enough for me

I cant wait til the tool crashes out, imagine the stick he'll get for that on his website

Fair play though for not deleting the ''negative'' comments

I don't want Scotland to fail either, but narrow minded comments like Murray's (in jest or not) and the incidents involving England fans up in Scotland starts to generate a dislike of them.

However, if our roles were reversed, I would wager the attitude would be the same - England fans supporting Scottish opponents and all that

I am starting to wonder if a lot of the increase in friction this time around is due to the English media realising they may well end up with a dictatorial jock for PM in a year or so & that is something nobody in power seems to want.

This is my 2nd world cup up here & although 4 years ago wasn't pleasant, it's downright nasty this time around, I liken it to old-firm day/weekend but it's been like that for nigh on 6 weeks now.

That's nonsense. What about Jocky Wilson?

Just taking this a bit further off topic, I am always baffled that the Tartan Army are always perceived as an amiable bunch of people who do nobody harm, and just enjoy a few drinks and a non offensive sing song.

Having had the misfortune to see many of this misbegotten miscreants at first hand my thoughts are that they are anything but.

Most of these people do not have the faintest idea of what a toilet is, and are happy to defecate, urinate and vomit wherever they happen to be without out a care for public health or basic decency. Anyone who has witnessed the Tartan Army or Celtic supporters first hand will surely bear this out.

I just get severely hacked off when i read patronising bullpoo from North of the Border saying how wonderfully well behaved these paragons of virtue are.

Very good post.
There seems to be a mentality in Scottish people that it's great to drink/take drugs until you fall down comatose. A very strange environment particularly when the Scottish executive seem hell bent on creating a sort of uber-Scandinavian nanny state.

However, probably not fair to single out Celtic fans, all Scottish football fans are the same if not worse. Look at Rangers in the 70s when they won their piece of European silverware, smashed up the host city of the final (that was after they won!!!), compare that to the stories of Lisbon & Seville for the Celts & Gothenburg for Aberdeen.

More off topic about the Scots but I saw a newstory on Bloomberg today:

One in Eight Scots Babies Born With Illegal Drugs, Record Says
2006-06-28 04:15 (New York)

By Peter Woodifield
June 28 (Bloomberg) -- About one in eight Scottish babies is
born with traces of illegal drugs in its body, the Daily Record
said, citing the doctor who carried out the study.
As many as 7,000 of the 54,000 babies born in Scotland each
year are drug affected, the newspaper said. The most common drug
found was cannabis. Other drugs found included heroin, cocaine and
ecstasy, the Glasgow-based paper said.
Some mothers were still taking large quantities of drugs even
when they were at least four months pregnant and knew they were
carrying a baby, pediatrician Scott Williamson told the newspaper.
Williamson carried out the study of babies born at a former
maternity hospital in Glasgow in 2001.
The number of Scots children treated in hospital or
rehabilitation units for using cannabis has trebled in the past
five years, the Record said, citing a separate report. The
youngest child treated was aged nine, the paper said.

I am sure that Rangers are just as bad, my experiences have always been with Celtic supporters.

Although I did have an altercation i a Glasgow hotel with a bloke who claimed to be sat on the crossbar when the hordes over ran Wembley in 1977, but fortunately he did not evacuate his bowels everywhere.

Which wont be Roddick obviously

Come on Baghdatis, though if Murray beats him don't worry, 'casue Hewitt will thump him in the Quarters.

Clearly he's annoyed some English tennis fans as well, saw a group of people wearing t-shirts that said 'Anyone but Murray' on them when I was at SW19 on Friday! Classic

I thought that to an extent, but then again Roddick is pretty much just a serve on legs, with an artificially inflated ranking because he got to the final last year.

Hewitt, however, is probably the second best grass court player out there after Federer... how he copes with Murray's excellent array of passing shots will be interesting though!

Looks like Murray is trying to undo some of the PR disaster that his comments about England have caused him:

"I knew it was 0-0 when I went on and Rooney had been sent off," he said. "I'm surprised they lost on penalties but it's disappointing.

"It would have been great for England to win the World Cup, it would have been great for British sport, but now I'm going to have to try and win here."

Fair play to him for winning yesterday. If he makes the last four then I might jump on the bandwagon and support him....

For goodness' sake - it wasn't a PR disaster, it was a bunch of crazed jingoists blowing a slightly lame joke out of all proportion.

Anyone who wears "Anyone But Murray" shirts, in the misguided belief that in so doing they're backing up the overpaid underachievers who let us down in Gelsenkirchen, needs to have their head examining.

Murray - an unseeded teenager - just knocked out the third seed... and not in some spawny fashion in the fifth set; not because Roddick had a bad day at the office... but by simply outclassing him and putting him away in three sets.

If you can't appreciate how special a talent Murray is, and if you can't appreciate the fact that he's British, then that's pretty disappointing, TBH...

He's still an arrogant jumped-up little to55er though Matt (although you could argue, that mentality & personality is what has got him to the top of his sport). I don't dislike him just because he's Scottish.
