Alan McCormack

OBL - Really....................................You have serious issues over your borderline obsession with McCormack.

Initially he was a cracking signing but the majority of his Blues career was in reverse, he had a shocking attitude on the pitch and an even worse attitude away from the pitch. Out and about around town, he was laughable and got to the point where he was mocked by most people.

On the pitch and on the training ground, he became a bad apple, disruptive and a bad influence. I have heard that from people who were at the training ground each day.

For the original Macca, I have nice memories but they were more than outweighed by bad memories. Charlton fans cant wait to get rid, so that speaks for itself.

One more note....This is my personal opinion, so its not right or wrong!!!

All I would say about Barratt and Macca is that despite their service and wage complications they received....they were both very quick to jump ship. They were the club captain and vice captain in a side that were relegated without a whimper and were of course big big earners at the club. As a fan of this football club, I felt a little let down by them both.....

Both were cracking players early on, Barratt will always be a legend for his passion and love for the club but realistically both players had seen their best days behind them so in hindsight, them bailing out on us wasn't the end of the world.

I was about to say the same thing. OBL, for someone whose views are normally so balanced, it's amazing how biased your views on McCormack are.

McCormack only ever performed when he had a good player alongside him to cover his maurauding runs and charges forward. When he no longer had a Bailey/Maher to mop up after him and cover for him when he pushed on he failed to perform. His attitude was terrible in the end. I remember him refusing to warm up in Laurence Bloom's pre match warm when every other player did, and being downright disrectful to LB when asked to join the warm up. He was constantly rumoured to be the cause of behind the scenes disruptiveness and became widely disliked by the majority of players (and fans).

As Silencer say's, Southend fans were glad to see him go in the end, Charlton fans also are glad to see him go also. This can't be a coincidence.

I cant help but think Macca gets a pretty raw deal from a lot of people on here.

He was a great player at L2 level for us the year we went up and he did a good job at trying to help us keep our championship status. He was pretty much unplayable in L1 and a partner to the more talented Bailey. He scored some great goals and by and large he gave his all.

I think he let himself down in the final seaon for sure but that dosent make him a player to dislike. Personally for me he was a good servant to the club, he lets himself down with his off the field antics but at the end of the day I dont think anyone could say he was a bad signing and thats all you can ask for really.

Barrett was a decent player who will be loved forever by some more for his passion and what he said than as a footballer as I think most people would agree outside of L2 he isnt that great a defender.

I don't get this at all. Barrett and McCormack were amongst a group of players who the Club were specifically not paying wages to in order to force them to tear up their contracts and move elsewhere. What did you want them to do? Turn up at the training ground for pre-season training and squat?

Nothing to do with any "obsession", that was more in people's minds and something that was played along with. He was much maligned on here and there was huge criticism of his off-field activities, so what if I defended the right for a footballer to have a life away from the pitch? I stand by what I said, he was a good servant to this club and gave what he could. Also on the VC score, yes, he was told he was VC and then what does Tilly do? On a couple of occasions when Barrett was out, he gives the armband to Peter Clarke. That hurt and yet he still did his best. Whether you or anyone else thinks that was not good enough is, of course, your opinion.

He and Barrett did not, as far as I can tell, jump ship early. They were hardly going to stay at a club where they'd received very erratic wages however well they got on with the supporters, and instead, both of them (from memory) gave up any rights to monies they were owed, so saving the club a pretty penny, and sought teams elsewhere. Nothing at all wrong with that.

Agreed. Its certainly true about the short term memory syndrome some people have.

Barrett and Mcormack were 85% of the time excellent for the club. End off [quote/]

Do you mean 85% of his total time at Southend or 85% of the time he was actually playing and not suspended?

Jeez, this is going on abit isn't it?

It's true some are being hard on Macca but then some are being overly generous too. He was a decent midfielder who played a reasonable number of games for us. In the championship season he gave a struggling side a boost where the 2nd midfield position (behind Maher) was a significant weakpoint, and in lg1 had the ideal (superior) partner in Bailey. It's no suprise he looked good playing alongside two quality players like that, however when he was expected to lead the midfield alongside Moussa/Grant/JFC he lacked somewhat.

In the pantheon of SUFC history he is a distinctly average player, and that's no insult.

McCormack was a **** at Element Nightclub, always get drunk & look a fool, like he didn't care for his body with drinks inside, when he should be fit for playing Pro football - u can see why Charlton let him go!

He just received this delightful little gem from a Charlton fan on Twitter;

@almac16 I have never been more happy at seeing a Charlton player leave the club, you're a waste of space and just ****ing awful !

Ouch - The fans do seem to turn against in the end don't they.

To be fair, he ****ed a lot of them off when after a thumping loss he boasted on twitter about heading out to the Oxo tower for dinner. He went quiet on twitter after that

Spoke to a Charlton fan recently who told me Macca is widely considered their most hated player ever. Such a shame as he did a good job for us in his League 2 loan spell and then gave our midfield a big boost in our Championship campaign. After we went down his performances gradually tailed off.

The fan wasn't exactly complimentary about Simon Francis either, though he did say the fans are very much behind Chris Powell because he's got them playing good football, as opposed to the hoofball under Plankinson.
