I've been a Blues fan for many years, a season ticket holder and try to get to at least 2 away games a season (and always the 'big' games, like tommorow!).

Despite being a girl (ok I'm 38!!), and often travelling to away games with my friend (who's also 38) or my partner, who is 48 - my Dad still panics when I tell him I'm going to an away game and he insists I ring him when we arrive and when we get back!! Its not personal - he does the same with my brother!!

So no, dont think you are at all silly to be worried for your son.

The official coaches are well organised and have to meet certain criteria (ie no alcohol on board and often get police escorts to / from the away ground, to avoid any trouble from home supporters). They are the safest way to get to / from away games. There is a real 'kindred spirit' amongst Southend fans, so he will be fine and will have a great time.

Dont expect him home till the early hours - the game could go to extra time / penalties (but I sincerely hope we win in normal time...) and its gonna be around 4 hours to get back to Southend from Doncaster - possibly longer if it stops en route and is dropping people off in Bas or on the A13.

Anyway, dont panic, and listen out for the party bus convoy arriving at Roots Hall on Saturday morning around 3am!!

Why are balloons barred from some matches though, they seem harmless enough to me?

probably more to do with the mess they create than anything sinister. there have been incidents when they have interfered with the match too

If you are genuinely worried, i suggest you follow him in the car, and tie a scarf to your's and his wrist, that way you cannot lose him, and up north they'd never hit a woman..

17 and I know hes old enough etc, I guess I have kept them close as a single parent and am just a bit worried.

and its a boy's duty to wind up his own (and other) people!!!

Us girls need to stick together..!! I mean, where else can go on a formum to pick on a bunch of spotty teenagers with no common sense, and theres no where like a football match to allow legitimate oggling some very fit and attractive players legs and a***s!!
