It all sounds a bit too American to me, I just wonder what evidence they have to arrest someone if they then need another 42 days to find sufficient evidence to hold them further.....

Why should there be a limit? If the people we choose to help protect us from these killers suspect them of terrorism we should trust their judgement. Hold them for as long as it takes.

I get fed up with hearing about the Human Rights of people who have no regard for other peoples human rights, especially when they are blowing them up.

We have sufficient laws to protect against terrorism as it is, if the government / police ever bothered to apply them correctly.

If they haven't got sufficient evidence to charge them then they shouldn't be arresting people in the first place. This would just give the police license to arrest people they think might possibly have thought about terrorism at some point in their life...

it's an arbritary figure plucked from the air. It's way too high and means nothing, except for the goverment to look tough. the reality is it is against the very principle of English law- i.e. right to a fair trial and innocent until proved guilty.

No problem with the Human rights of mass murderers being denied, its just that 42 days detention before there is sufficient evidence to detain someone further is not about the Human rights of the guilty, its about the Human rights of the innocent.

Exactly.

While the chant of "Human Rights" can be bloody irritating after a while, and is often misused, we live in a country where human rights are still taken seriously, and thank heavens for that. The minute we start compromising that in the name of expediency, we are doing the terrorist's work for them. Try living in countries where citizen's human rights count for nothing, like China, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and I promise that you will have a new respect for the way we do things.

42 days is the equivalent of a 3 month prison sentence. We have to be damn sure before we give the likes of Ms Smith that sort of power.

Errr I'm not sure I quite get your point, but if you mean that their way of doing things has precluded terrorism, then I think you are missing the point.

It probably wasn’t a good post by me, but the point was, in countries where they don’t mamby pamby around, and where they have a high level of discipline, they don’t get terrorists because the penalties will be severe.

Example – a mate of mine works for the Police/FA on matters of Football hooliganism. There were two arrests in Russia at the Champs league final, both of these instigated by the British Police who were there. Due to the strong presence of Russian “law enforcers”, fans generally behaved themselves. When people know they can get away with stuff and the penalties won’t be very severe, they will do it, which seems to happen more and more in this country and who is doing anything about it?

I think that is more a general comment about the British judical system than about terrorism specifically - although I do agree.

Whoever posted about the human rights of the innocent, got it spot on. Without capital punishment terrorists in this country get away with murder.

Then is the answer Capital punishment? Not that it can ever be brought back as the same clowns who want to bring in 42 day detention also made sure that the rope could never be returned.

no, as they could then be called martyrs.

the reason other countries don't have similar issues is because the Muslimist terrorists are attacking the West, nor China etc.

I would prefer to lock up all suspected terrorists forever. Only think about realeasing them once they become loyal to crown and country, and after that ship em to the 'stan to fight other terrorists.. that way they'll wipe each other out!

Any terrorism in those countries?

Chinas human rights issues are among the worst if not THE worst in the world...I think the terrorists are the ones in uniforms there. I dont think theres enough room in the jails...'excuse me Mr.Chan, got room for another 3 and a half million?'

I remember going to the states about 10years ago, and I got interregated as I went to Turkey on holiday the year before. They wernt gonna let me in. They're the biggest bleedin terrorists...
Will I get 42 days detention when I return to live in UK next year?
