2nd Test

nice one jimmy... cook and bell need to make some big scores for us to make this look remotely acceptable

Pretty gutsy effort from Anderson as he wore a couple from Steyn.

Stating the bleeding obvious England have their work cut out to save this match.

Needs Freddie to play an innings of Botham Headingley 81 proportions not to lose now.

Been a very poor Test performance by England with very few of the side emerging with much credit I feel.:'(

I was chatting to a bloke at work about the first test the other day, and i said to him there is no way on earth that England could've batted so diligently and dourly as SA did to secure the draw ... lo and behold one week later we are indeed put in just that situation ... the result ?? a foregone conclusion i'm afraid

What would people consider to be the most recent rearguard actions by England in recent years? A few sides have put up a brick wall against us in recent years but I cant recall too many occassions of late where we have done the same.

Atherton scoring 180 odd in Joburg would count ... but that is almost a generation ago ... i cannot think of any more recent off the top of my head ... where's Exiled Shrimper when you need him most !!!!!!!!

Sadly, as time creep by us, that was over ten years ago! I just cant recall any such efforts by us in recent years (say, from the Fletcher era). Strangely, we have been quite good at chasing totals in the 4th innings, and this was a bit of a signature of the Fletcher era. Even in recent times, the Sri Lankans, Indians and to a lesser extent the Kiwis' have stuck around to prevent us winning games we were dominating.......

Against this lot in 1998, Gus Fraser and Crofty batting out the draw at Old Trafford (?), but as number 11 says not too many more in recent times.

Edit - Oops forgot the obvious one. 2005 at the Oval

I thought of that one but it wasnt actually a rearguard action, rather we needed to set a challenging target and take time out the game. What people sometimes forget is that the first innings scores were largely level....we were batting 3rd to get a lead.....and given the score we amassed if another day was available it would ahve been a tough one for the Ozzies to chase.

Great game though and always worthy of a mention at all opportunities! Sky have been showing the highlights of that series last week.......even now I feel nervous watching some of those games and I know the outcome!!

212-6 now, good partnership between Freddie and Ambrose.

Just over 100 behind now, important last seasion today methinks!

Flintoff and Ambrose at last have the idea and that is to stick around, runs are unimportant really, just got to be there at stumps.

EDIT - Jinx :punch::doh::thump:

20 minutes on and it's still alive. Broad seems to be batting very well with the occasional loose shot. Who's to blame him frankly. If I was out there, I'd get to 61 and then let loose before going back to the dressing room and seeing if any of the batsmen can look him in the eye.

Would be nice to inconvenience them in to getting changed.

Just remembered Broad's record of beating his top score in consecutive tests...surely not again?
