If what I've heard is correct, we have buckled in the stand off with Orient and improved our offer. Dubious source though, somebody who knows somebody who knows Barry Hearn and I'm not even sure why he'd know??

I'm sure plenty of the clubs mentioned have done both - I'm just saying that looking purely at the number of signings doesn't tell the whole story. Would we be any better had Phil Brown signed an extra six squad players?

I think it's a mistake to get bogged down with numbers. The annoyance and frustration I have, is that this has all been left until the last minute and has more than a hint of desperation about it. We've had areas where it was evident even last season, we needed to strengthen. We started this campaign with clear deficiencies.........commanding central defender, creative midfielder, striker with pace (and hunger:winking:).......whether McGlashan is an effective replacement for Worral, I'll let you decide. When you look towards the bench, options (game changing ones) are virtually non-existent. We're already a month into the season and are still trying to sort things out............how many other League One clubs are in a similar situation? Always nice to make an additional signing just before the window closes..........but leaving it until then to bring in essential players can't be right.

In todays Echo Phil Brown is basically saying that today is the key to the rest of the season, if he can sign a few players then he says he will be happy with the squad. Otherwise, according to him it will be a season of struggle. This means that the current squad he has assembled after three years in charge is, by his own admission not good enough. Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut!

The squad we had last year was pretty much based around the one we came up with via the playoffs. We are now looking to bring in players proven at a higher level to move forward but it proving tough. Maybe we could have set the bar in terms of prime targets lower- can't judge on trialists as they are rarely prime targets (Ranger is a bit of a special case due to his past). Of course we can put a negative spin on it, saying most targets, trialists or not, are simply not good enough. I can imagine the comments if we were about to sign Lionel Messi- not proven at L1 level, high risk signing, saw him play once he wasn't very good, never played in the Ryman league, I saw him eating, too light weight, one footed, not over 6 foot 7, he was rubbish when I last saw him when he was 7 so he must be now...

at least 1 big forward who can challenge and win headers score goals and put it about a bit
like Emmanuel-Thomas
needed

I would agree- then not totally reliant on Ranger being fit. That said I would take Simpson first could we sign two front men?

Anyone got any ideas on the Brighton winger we're in talks with who played last night? Is it Joe Ward? I think he used to play for Chelmsford.

Did anyone go last night who can give us the lowdown on whether either of the wingers were any good?

The best U21 on either side was Kyprianou. He was Watford U21 and can play LW or Left Wing Back like last night. Based on last night we already have someone better than Brighton could offer. So no thanks.

Even with Just Simpson we would have 5 first team strikers. Obviously Ranger needs to show he can remain fit but cant see us getting another one.

Looking at who we have signed so far the likes of Cox, Ranger, Ferdinand, Demetriou, Mcglashan, Sokolik, Oxley, King I don't think we have had a bad window, OK a few of those still need to prove quite a bit. If we could add someone like Blake or Simpson plus maybe another wide player or CM then I think we have done ok. My issue is more with Brown and not necessarily the players he has. If he can't get the selections right, motivate the players and actually have a tactical plan then it doesn't matter who is in the squad. Today he said that unless he gets players in its going to be a long hard season, hardly a vote of confidence for those currently in the squad

I dont know much about Ebanks-Blake's recent record but on the face of it I'd have him over Simpson. He strikes me more as the physical centre forward that we need right now.

Hearing that Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has been offered to Blues. There's no fee involved but Blues are still chasing other striking options.

If we then up with a side that contains a fit Ferdinand, Wordsworth, Ranger, Cox, A.N. Other......and still struggle, Brown must surely fall on his sword

Jennings can't keep weight off and Baxter is on a year's drugs ban, neither of those are even vaguely attractive signings.

Prime examples of wasted talent; Jennings was a hot prospect at Bayern Munich, but has since blown it. Baxter is a real letdown, seen him play a few times, would have been great for us, strong creative type - didn't know he had a drug problem, but then again we still have Ranger, who has baggage... so no doubt some club will take a chance on them?
