Data Analysis on Players.

WE 👏🏻NEED👏🏻 A👏🏻 DIRECTOR👏🏻 OF👏🏻 FOOTBALL!

It's all well and good having this Money ball approach and having a transfer committee. It stops the club having another Phil Brown situation where we have a squad of players that only he can coach, leading to a mass clear out when the new manager comes in, only for the process to be rinsed and repeated each time.

It doesn't make sense to have a manager only sign who he wants with no structure for the club moving forward.

HOWEVER

Without a director of football, we have noone high up who is qualified to help make decisions.

Kev will go to the board "This is the system we are playing and these are the strengths and weaknesses in the squad" and then balance that against expectations.

John will then send in a report of players that he believes will strengthen Kev's squad

The transfer committee will then do their "Money Ball" check list and then proceed to talk business with the selected targets.

This is where it breaks down.

NOBODY ON THE TRANSFER COMMITTEE KNOWS FOOTBALL!!!!

Not to mention half of the decision makers aren't even in the same continent 🤷🏻‍♂️

Right now it's a mess and just like when we had the em***go, we are missing out on targets.

We are currently functioning like a semi pro team

"Oh sorry we couldn't extend Goldings loan, so and so was on holiday"

(not a fact, just an ironic example / prediction)

Our director of football is now AI.

I think people are a bit confused as to what exactly data analysis is, the first part is gathering the data.

Yes there are databases of information available but a big part of it are the metrics that can't be seen by stats alone, how the player will fit into the squad is a massive part of the recruitment process and should not be underestimated.

Scouting plays a big part in gathering the data, just as important as the amount of goals, assists & forward passes is where the player ranks on the cockometer. Everyone is on it somewhere, there position changes hourly, what we need is to avoid another Kensdale situation.

Actually it's probably worth expanding a bit on the Kensdale situation as not only have we lost him as a player but due to his actions and upheaval around it the physiological safety of the squad was torn apart and that is one of the big reasons the squad isn't achieving what they did last season

We have one. John Still is Head of Football.

Kev and John are on the transfer committee - so there is football knowledge - granted they're outnumbered by 'board directors'

Have you just made up the process above?

Really starting to pay off this data driven method of identifying decent players.
The competitive edge they talk about must have other teams quivering in there football boots…..,somebody reboot the computer, it’s in no hurry to replace the ones we have lost.

I don’t get what the issue is as nobody’s said anything about us not looking at players, scouting them or Kev not having a say at who comes in. It’s merely another tool to help support recruitment which people have moaned about not being decent enough.
This is how I see it too. This is just a means to narrow down targets.

I don't know how many people are in our scouting team or how deep JS network goes, but there are hundreds of matches every Saturday and we can only really have eyes that are looking out for our clubs best interests at a few of them at best.

As well as that, I don’t think we’ve even implemented it yet fully, based on Tom’s comments. It’ll hopefully help us get some real quality in during the summer.
I’m personally encouraged by COSU trying different approaches (as long as we’re watching the players and Kev gets a say on who’s in).

What seems odd is, why the data approach would slow things down, however good the data available is, it should be there ready to go, maybe we have the data but not a sound analyst of that data or there are differing opinions on which metrics are most important. Surely you’d sort all this out before attempting to implement it.
This is the point. Yes great let’s follow that path - the proof will be in the outcome and let’s not pre-judge. FWIW my instinct has been the it (incl. Brentford model) has always been the way to go.

But it requires commitment from all involved to support the new process to ensure it doesn’t slow everything down - especially as we sit in the transfer window, not being able to fill the bench, and playing the team in 8th tomorrow whom we go above if we win.

I haven’t written the season off and more importantly I strongly expect Kev and the players haven’t.

So early days this will probably take much more time and effort by all to ensure the hoops are navigated in a timely manner. As it settles I’m sure the desired results will be achieved more smoothly and efficiently. We certainly need contingency for people being unavailable and ensuring availability doesn’t hold things up.

Now is the time for digits to be extracted - Kev must be pulling his hair out..

Completely different roles

Head of football is basically identifying talent and managing long term player progression.

John's job is to make sure there is a constant pipeline of talent coming through he club

Director of football is the overall strategy side of the club who would work with Kev and the coaches. Overseeing things such as contract negotiations etc and making sure the coaching staff and players align with the clubs philosophy.

They are the middle man between the board and the coaching staff

Last time you used the clappy thing to illustrate a point, all it did was highlight that you didn't know what you were talking about.

Congratulations, you've just done it again.

I'm confused. Is this piece of equipment used in the showers after game?

The data-based approach has worked pretty well for Brighton.
If it's good enough for them..

The (very big) difference is Brighton are in the Prem with a huge budget are are therefore predominantly looking for signings already in the higher professional leagues where data collection is done consistently, accurately and to a high standard (ie the data is valuable) for clubs lower down the pyramid who generally have a much lower budget they will generally only be looking for players in the UK, probably geographically fairly close and commonly from the leagues below to get the bright upcoming starlets and that’s where data because less available (if at all) and certainly less consistent.

That’s not to say you can’t use data to look for a particular player profile (age, position, physical characteristics, contract length, location and primary stats like appearances, clean sheets, goals etc) but that really is “just” a desktop way of perhaps narrowing the search so you can use physical scout to go and watch a lower number of targets.

It’s just pointless comparing SUFC or any lower league recruitment set up with Brentford/Brighton as it’s not the same model (they can offer wages to encourage people to move from the other side of the world they’ve identified through global data models)
