I tink this may be big week for us ,Lads coming back to training and the trip to Spain etc ,Thinking we could have a few signings coming in also ,plus i wonder if any trialists will be going with the lads to Spain .

I never get that... yeah we dont quite think you're what we're after (good enough) but will have a look anyway. Prove us wrong... why dont you come abroad with us... we we will happily pay to take you on an all expenses paid trip...

I agree. I can't see it happening to be honest. We have plenty of preseason left to play after the trip to invite trialists over.

It’s usually because there are gaps in the squad and don’t want players to play loads of minutes.

Brilliant move for him.
It also shows he was right to back himself in Jan and go and show what he can do at EFL level when plenty on here were saying it was a bad decision. A huge well done to him for playing the system professionally and properly. He gained admirers at two clubs in the same season. That's not easy to do for a young player on loan.

It will mean absolutely nothing to us in terms of money, but it further demonstrates the ability of our management team to enhance a players ability. He was so raw when he first arrived, but in the his last 5 games, he really started to show that he was a player that had improved massively. The successful coaching that had gone into him was obvious to see. That was also down to the player wanting to listen (just like Asombalonga did) and also down to experienced players like Bonne helping his development.

Let's hope the same happens with Spasov this season, a player who is actually ours.

So on a Monday morning close to the players returning, this is what my take is on the current state of play with our squad:

Danny Waldron has been replaced by Slavi Spasov
Jack Wood has been replaced by Sam Austin

Macauley Bonne has an offer on the table - negotiations are still ongoing.

Ben Goodliffe and James Golding have returned to their parent clubs and not been replaced.

I would expect therefore to see at least one central defender through the door, perhaps Ludwig Francillette?

If Bonne doesn't take the revised offer (which I assume is less money but possibly a longer deal) then I would expect one more forward through the door.

Then there is the question of another option at Left Wing Back, shame about Ben Brookes and would assume he was a name on the whiteboard - especially with him being relatively local. I guess we may be in for another like him, George Wind etc. an understudy for Bridge/Ralph.

My guess is then we could see 3 more through the door - 1 of which could be the return of Bonne.

I would have thought getting them in before the trip to Spain is an important consideration, but we may need to wait until the EFL window closes to get the right person in so patience is required - something often in short supply on here!

Three more players and Bonne i would be very happy with that

Nice summary. That LWB & a dominant CB are priority I would say after the additions of Spasov & Austin. I think a perm CB and one on loan as potential cover would work as we still have Crowther and Gubbins on the books and I thought Gubbins played well in his cameo's towards the end of season after a ticky start.

Think Gubbins plays well in a 4 which is where he played at QPR and on loan at Accy Stanley. He struggles more in a 3. Its not his fault but he is adaptable as some others

I don’t see Austin playing as a wing back. I think he’ll be part of the midfield three with licence to get more forward. So we now have 6x central midfielders competing for 3 positions. I think Kev’s preference as to how that trio is made up is to play a deeper more defensive midfielder (Morton, Miley), a more box-to-box midfield (KAF, Husin) and a more attacking midfielder (Austin, Coker).

Which makes me wonder whether LCP will find himself as first choice LWB this season. I know many are desperate to see him play centrally, but we’ve never had much confirmation as to where Kev sees him long term and we’re fairly well stacked in central midfield now. I’m not sure how you fit a new LWB, Austin, KAF and LCP in the same side unless you play Austin, KAF and LCP as the midfield trio which I don’t think would work.

For me though, a midfield 5 of these would be pretty damn good for this level:

LCP, Austin, Morton, KAF, Gus

Especially if LCP and Austin interchanged at times with one cutting inside off the left and one getting in the box. They could compliment each other brilliantly and be an absolute force.

That also gives us a seriously good second XI/competition in midfield of:

Bridge, Coker, Miley, Husin, Wind

So really, providing no one leaves, I think we’re 2x ball playing central centre backs and another striker off being really solid on paper. If Bonne re-signs, that just leaves us 2x centre backs and I actually think we’re good to go.
