Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation Transfer Thread - Summer 2025 Edition.

Transfer news
A player is only worth what another club is willing to pay for him.

If anyone thought he could replicate his seventeen goal season the fee will likely be north of 100,000 but if the belief is he is unlikely to ever match that again he will go for much less.

If he does leave us regardless of what fee we might receive he was an exceptionally astute signing. Previously a part timer as he quickly adapted to a higher level of football, and, over three seasons played no less than one hundred and twenty one times for us, scoring thirty goals. Memorably, he once also filled in as our goalkeeper. Also relevant is that in all of those games he never gave less than his all.

As far as I know he has no academy background and is an unusual player for these times as his background seems to be exclusively non league. Kudos to whoever spotted him and advocated his signing..

He would not have been an expensive recruit (we were pretty much skint when we was brought in). No one could begrudge him now going elsewhere to secure better pay than we might be able to offer.

Next time we read that Carlisle or York have dug deep into their pockets to sign a player it will be worth remembering GSM. Unheralded, he came to us from pretty much nowhere and yet was able to make a real difference. If we are to move out from the NL it will be because of more signings with a GSM type background rather than splashing out on signing on fees and wages much higher than the league norm.

Never mind Cashman, our best signings for the coming season might be players most Blues supporters have yet to hear of.

In the meantime as far as GSM is concerned whether he stays or goes he will remain much loved by most if not all Blues supporters.

Why did I just read that with the voice of Simon Jordan in my head?
Do you wear Joe 90 glasses?

Simon Jordan? Arguably better looking but less financially secure.

And on another topic completely I thought Goodliffe's threat in the box backed up by vital goals were a vital part of our late push which ended at Wembley. If he is not to return, as seems likely, can we replace the attacking side of his game. The goals he scored might be much harder to replace than the ones Hopper, Kendall, Boone and Walker may or may not score in 2025/26.

Heres another view...

If all our 4 strikers aren't big scorers in this team setup should the answer be a change in setup?

We scored goals with Bim because he could outpace and strike the ball well by himself. These players are even more rare. Most players need clear goal scoring opportunities to be made

Our right wing back scored mostly because of the late arrival/support coming form deep right - one of the benefits of the wing back setup.

Ie do we really need new forwards therefore? It's unlikely we will get too many new players in.

So do we find another Bim to score the goals? Ie a new transfer .

... Or do we change our setup (also unlikely) to a more attacking format - but one that can be more secure defensively too?

It seems with the way we setup we either score goals or not score enough. Is this the players or the setup? If we play more attacking with this setup it seems that we are more susceptible to conceding.

This is of course rhetorical because it will be much of the same.

However if we shifted to a core 433 for example (appreciate setup shifts mid game although this core will impact the players).

As per current players - 2 needed

Colin/hayes

Wind/gus
Taylor/crowther
LCD/gubbins - 1 player needed
Ralph/LB - player needed

Husin/Morton
Coker/parillion
Forson/Miley

Bridge/Bonne
Hopper/ST - 1 player needed
Walker/Kendall

In a 532 / 352 - 3 needed

Colin/hayes

Wind/gus
Taylor/crowther
CD/CD - 2 players needed
gubbins/Ralph
LWB/Bridge - 1 player needed

Husin/Morton
Coker/parillion
Forson/Miley

Walker/Bonne
Hopper/Kendall

Quite interesting seeing it like this and what's needed to solve our striking/scoring challenges. Midfield doesn't change but we have one more player at the back. Less reliance on a high scoring wing back although it doesn't stop him getting forward. Rather than relying on a wing back overlap scoring would be great to see us shifting setup to focus on scoring. We can still play slower but theres more people in defence and more in attack. Also if Gus does go as shared on here - not much impact

Less goals conceded more scored?

We paid £35k for Cards and had written into his contract a release clause of £120k.

We paid less for GUS and he plays in a position that has a lower price than a goalscoring Striker.

Therefore, even with his incredible season last time around, I would expect, if we sold him, an accepted value would be between £75k to £100k, possibly with add ons, goals, appearances etc.

I’m pretty sure Cardwells release clause was £145k

I know Danny Cowley said he would have a chat with Ben and see what he wanted to do, since then we have lost the guy (Fiacre Kelleher) who was keeping him out of the side as he has gone back home to play for Cork City. We have complications here because the prospective new owners haven't bought the club yet so everything is a little uncertain at present. Of course players/managers are away on holiday at present, I don't think much will happen until contracts expire at the end of June. Ben is under contract for another year with us having another years option after that most probably, but I am sure the club will do whatever is best for Ben one way or another.
