Breaking News Shaun Hobson joins Oldham

You don't see him in the changing room, the training ground, the local community etc
JD adds value and I'd love him to stay in a coaching capacity

I know that has been the plan for sometime.

I can see him involved in the academy/B team next season, but still registered as a player to cover for GSM.

It’s funny how for a significant part of those 7 years (from Powell until Maher) it was widely considered that we lacked leadership as we plummeted down the leagues but now he’s out of the team his leadership is considered such an asset that we need to create a new role.

FWIW I actually expect there will be a fair few vacancies in what’s left of the academy by the time the takeover happens. That’s the route both Tilly and Maher took onto becoming much loved Southend managers.
People do seem to have short memories about JD's time here....

Its hardly been great has it. Not all his fault of course but football wise its been the worst ever, he hardly set the world on fire, and it wasnt so long ago people were regularly complaining about him just being gobby and getting yellow and reds all the time....

Maybe he will be a great coach tho. Hope so. but lets not gloss over his tenure.

It's fine to talk the talk, but the guy has been a part of 2 relegations, and has been a weak link imo.

He doesn't have the legs and can be reckless at times as well - the Col Utd game in league 2 springs to mind.

Need more from someone, you talk like he needs a statue built of him.

Let him go

What has his legs going got to do with a coaching role?
I can think of weaker links than Demi in those 2 relegation seasons

In those relegation seasons, who do you think was out in the community, making sure the club continued to engage with fans, to give back to the community, to get involved in projects that involved fundraising for life saving equipment for the community?

Football isn't just about winning games (though would be nice to win a few from time to time)

There was talk of those who wanted him for a player/coaching role.

I can also think of weaker links, and they were quite rightly moved on.
Just because you're not the weakest link, doesn't mean you're safe from release.

The relegation seasons there was Covid lockdown, I think there were only 2 games at Roots Hall so I'm not sure what community items you're referring to. Could you elaborate?

Bottom line is that's great and a good representation of the club. But there are other players that did similar and have been moved on aswell.

We were relegated twice so one season Demi was out there. If course the other season we were mainly in lockdown but I guess you've never heard of zoom or teams?

I get it, you don't like Demi and want him gone but I think he will add value next season as a coach at some level.

Not sure what his current contract position is, probably out of contract. I would be happy keeping him in a back up position as he does get into key areas at the right time but I think Demi himself will want to focus on coaching anyway

I seem to remember Kevin Maher being in back to back relegation teams

Didn’t he only join in the second half of the second relegation?

He narrowly missed Tilly who played in the first of those relegation sides but his teammates included Mark Stimson who went onto manage Grays, Barnet, Gillingham etc and Nathan Jones who has probably been the most successful ex-Southend player as manager.

Could be the reverse of the Well known and successful players, such as Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, to name 2, aren't always the more successful in management/coaching.

Could we have the next Graham Taylor on our hands in Demi??

Although I don't disagree with this and I don't think bringing him on with 10 mins to go with we're winning is terrible, we can't keep offering him a deal because of this.

Personally it makes sense to make him a coach, if we need one and want to keep him.

Still gutted about this. He was consistently good last season, and was one of the best 3 players. Always tried his best as well, despite all the wages nonsense.
