Post-Match Thread and Ratings Dover Athletic 0-1 Southend United

Poor game, lots of possession in first half and not creating any real chances. Fell away second half with Dover the better side and looking more dangerous, great we scored though to get the points. Need to create more chances to challenge the better teams, hope it's just an off day.

I agree with all those who have made the point that we have only played those in and around us, Bromley apart.

However, every win boosts our confidence. The change in personnel since the Bromley game is a huge step in the right direction. Our own confidence and belief is on the up on the back of it. We are now fighting and playing with pride if we go behind.

Taking on Barnet and Woking next, 2 clubs around us and now with us as a mid table club, lower admittedly, but a step up or should be and they have been above us all season, so win or stay unbeaten in these games would be another huge boost. and a step forward, not to mention up the table.

3 points away from home, clean sheet and now pretty much safe from relegation which was a huge possibility before king Kev came in.

Yes we're beating the sides in the bottom half but the fact of the matter is we've stopped that awful losing mentality, which has been rotting our club for years now.

Let's get a mid table finish, belief and a winning team mentality and build on that because it's not the only way you get out of this league.

Nearly 2000 away fans there today? That’s absolutely unbelievable.

The sleeping giant is starting to stir…
Yeah, marvellous!
I'm fairly sure we weren't doing that as a league club over the last few seasons.
I'd be willing to venture it even matched 2014-15 when we eventually won at Wembley.

With new players joining recently...the remainer of the season will be like the longest pre-season we will ever get. Getting results that keep us safe, less pressure on performance and a support base that is the best in the league. It all bodes well for next season. Let's get as high as we can in the league this year. (Who knows...we could just scrape into the play-offs?) We can dream...can't we?

With the income from an outstanding away support, Dover will wish they could play us every week.

Awful awful game! How did we win? I’m not sure. Both very average, and their short little attacker caused us all sorts of worrries.

That said, the 2000 who headed down, really enjoyed being part of it! On to the next one!

We will have to up our game to escape this league

from their forum:

Definitely echo the point about the Southend fans. Unbelievable support given the position they’re in this year after 2 successive relegations before this. Hats off to them for turning up in those sort of numbers and creating that atmosphere. Best away support at Crabble I’ve seen apart from Palace. They even eclipsed Bristol Rovers for me when they came down to Crabble on the last day of the season with a chance to win the league. Given the relative league positions that says a lot

We won by battling until the end to overcome a team that dragged us down to their level and did all that they could to cut up the pitch and stop us playing.

Hmm...

Just to play devil's advocate, how many on here have ever commentated a live match?
Anyone?
I agree Nik and Glenn are better, but Smith wasn't dreadful, as in Newport County club commentator-last-season dreadful.
And Smith was on his own for 90 minutes. The other two switch back and forth on many matches: it's easier.
Sometimes, Zone picks up an idea and most run with it regardless, so's someone can fire off the next 'funny' line.
I hope Nik gets better soon, but had we been winning 4-0 in the first half, I wonder how many would have been broadsiding the commentator?
Maybe, Smith's worst enemy was our below par performance, despite the win.
I'd agree. I think we were just running with the ball there - his commentary wasn't too bad, in all honesty.

A truly terrible game and performance, but we need to view it as a whole over the last month - which has been good.

Not the best performance but who cares, we are now hard to beat and push to the end. 4 pts from these two away games is excellent return. Pleased for Husin with a great finish. As for the fans, wow, 1935 enough said

Just got back. Pretty poor performance on a somewhat substandard pitch, we just never seemed to get out of first gear. Loads of possession first half with only Dennis' missed header to show for it in terms of clear cut chances, although we could have got a pen early on. Looked stonewall from the terrace but I'd like to watch the replay before I feel too aggrieved!

Second half Dover seemed more lively - they had a couple of tricky forwards that ran us a bit ragged at times - though we grew in stature a bit as the half went on, and once Husin scored there was only really going to be one winner, notwithstanding the scare when Dover hit the post just after our goal. Should have scored a second really if Dalby had squared it for Powell but a win is a win, and I'd rather take 3 points and a poor performance than a valiant draw whilst playing well, like Tuesday at Aldershot.

Blues fans sublime again. We really do have fantastic support. 1900 for a team 18th in the league after consecutive relegations is sterling support. We should be proud.
