Post-Match Thread and Ratings Dover Athletic 0-1 Southend United

A very average performance today in all honesty which was not helped by the pitch at all, you could see spells of our high possession game but was really difficult to play on that surface. Just shy of 2,000 away fans in the national league, back to back relegations, now 16th is mind blowing. Well done all.

Moving onto Barnet for next Tuesday- it was interesting to see their result against Stockport who in all fairness are now top of the table, I wonder if they will change their formation.

I saw on another thread that we have sold 5,500 already for Barnet can we just be prepared to open half of block X for this fixture? There cannot be a repeat of the Kings Lynn game, the whole block was 2 people to a seat and wasn’t safe nor practical.

I think it’s important to have some perspective on our recent upturn of form. We’ve played Dover, Kings Lynn, Weymouth and Yeovil, teams low on confidence and results and drawn with Bromley and Aldershot - Bromley was a good result in hindsight.

The others have all been lower league teams. Coming up are more teams around us in Woking, Eastleigh and Barnet and these will provide a sterner test.

All of the above said, what an awesome transformation both on and off the pitch. I’m getting a sense that we really a United Southend, not just Southend United.

I think they must it was far to crowded the other night...I will give @Rhys_ a call Monday but they might think of it themselves.

Was a **** game..but difference now is southend fight and show steel
For the first time in years ...really feel southend united are returning

Yes, it sounded as if we were terrible but there is a huge difference between the vibe at the packed Hall on a Friday night and away to Dover on a cold January afternoon on a pitch where apparently no one could keep their feet.
No team plays well every game but winning when you are not at your best is a skill possessed only by the more successful teams.
I will give them a pass this time. No one wants to be dire but the three points will come in very handy, thank you very much.
We have to play better Tuesday night. I for one believe we will.

Hmm.

How many on here have ever commentated a live match?
Anyone?
I agree Nik and Glenn are better, but Smith wasn't dreadful, as in Newport County club commentator-last-season dreadful.
And Smith was on his own for 90 minutes. The other two switch back and forth on many matches: it's easier.
Sometimes, Zone picks up an idea and most run with it regardless, so's someone can fire off the next 'funny' line.
I hope Nik gets better soon, but had we been winning 4-0 in the first half, I wonder how many would have been broadsiding the commentator?
Maybe, Smith's worst enemy was our below par performance, despite the win.

I'll the take the three points but it pains me to say that was one of the worst games of the season.

Caught the man in the middle on the platform of Dover Priory after the game, complemented him on his performance. He said to me about the penalty: your manager said to me "did you think it was a penalty?" 'I said, well if you thought it was clear cut, you'd have been waving wild for it. He said Maher conceded that it wasn't clear cut and hence his appeal lacked that gut emotion. On replaying the incident I agree.

Will take the three points and move on. Hopefully never, ever back to Dover.
