This is a League full of very poor teams.
Although we lost , I thought Oldham were dire and can’t see them getting many points.
Just got to hang in there and hope we can put a run together.
Still going to be very tough for us to survive
Oldham weren't great but they do score goals - more than most in the bottom half; one more than Harrogate in fact - and although they've shipped only two less than us they'll pick up enough points IMO.

Was Dion Dublin leading their attack that night? With John Beck as manager? And they roughed up our pitch to spoil our beautiful football? Shocking!

You're thinking of April 1991 rather than April 1972!

Roots Hall was packed that night.

That 1972 one was before I was born but was that the one when Derek Belloti broke his arm and Spud went in goal?

Southend utd v Cambridge...21.11.2020..!!!
Bloody hell...
Im still trying to get over .....21.04.1972....when they beat us at Roots Hall....it was my birthday and we all thought we were going up for the first time that night..
Is that the game

Pretty sure it was. Think the attendance that night was about 18,000.happy days

I got married in 1975, I feel very old now.

Yes we would have been promoted for the first time in our history that night with a win.
Of course we went up that season but missed out on promotion at home in front of around 18000.
Pretty sure Bill Garner went to put the keeper's jersey on at first but it was actually Spud that went in goal.
Unfortunately it was nearly 50 years ago and my memory is not exactly what it was!

Just to stir up the agony a bit more for you Oz here was the moment. One of my first Roots Hall memories. We got Derek back to the Hall with SUEPA a couple of years ago - he was in great form and looking good

Only one win and perhaps we won’t be ready to play with true confidence just yet, but surely a shift in approach from recent games and an intent not to roll over now. Cambridge shouldn’t be feared either, they only drew against Barrow last time out.

keep the line-up as much the same as possible.

That 91 Cambridge side were a horrible team to watch and play against .A lower league 70s Leeds United reputation followed them
Unfortunately we need that type of mentality now to turn this round.
This is such an important game and will tell us so much about whether we are now turning the corner or last week was just a blip.
Has to be the same line up with a similar game plan as our lack of goalscoring dictates our play

21st April 1972 with 4 games to go - a win would have clinched promotion.
I was totally gutted after the game -the collapse of 1967/68 was going to happen again.

The crowd was 17,059- our biggest ever 4th division crowd.
Derek Bellotti actually dislocated his elbow making his first save in the 25th minute.
Cribbing from the "Fifty of the Finest Matches Book". Spud went in goal - all 5ft 7in of him - I think Bill Garner wanted to go in goal.

We kicked towards the north bank in the second half and took the lead in the 47th minute through Bill Garner.

As time wore on we got the jitters and made 2 mistakes in the 72nd and 78th minutes.

Then Alec Smith replaced Spud in goal as we went for an equaliser which wasn't to be.
Lincoln only drew the next day which meant we only need one point for our next game which we got the following Tuesday at Scunthorpe.

April 91 -again just 4 games left going for the third division championship- A 0-0 draw in front of 10,664. We finished in second place one point behind them after taking just 2 points from the last 4 home games.

Possibly uniquely the three teams automatically promoted Cambridge ourselves and Grimsby had all come up from Div 4 the year before.

Cambridge were of course the nasty team managed by John Beck where football was at its most direct. Punt it to the wings -win throws - long throws to Dion Dublin, Steve Claridge and John Taylor who got 42 goals between them. Danny O'Shea played 39 times for them that season.

Our main rivalry was in that period from 1989/90 to 1992/93. They finished 5th in 1991/92 in Divsion 1 but plummeted back quicker than us in 1992/93.

Since then in the league, they haven't scored against us in the last 6 games, haven't won any of the last 8 - their last win being in Feb 1999.

All points to an easy win for us???

Back to the game this Saturday, the back page of the Echo has a Macca article where they report that he is in the reckoning for a place against Cambridge. If true, then yes please.

I agree.
I think he’d be perfect for this game.
They are the ones at the top and we are still firmly rooted to the bottom , so the pressure to win is on them IMO.
We should pack the midfield, disrupt them and stay in the game.
We will get chances , this is L2 , and just have to be ready to take them

There's a little bit of excitement in me for this weekends game regardless who it's against. It's funny what a win can do, but I'm in two minds. Last week I forgot and we won about football. The mildly superstitious side wants to try to forget again, the other wants to listen.
