Your Favourite Player

Personally, Pat Scully...

Was a family friend and a very close friend of my dads, Used to get free tickets occasionally and entrance to the Players Lounge, which in those days was regularly visited by the players after the match. Was a generally nice bloke, Was gutted when he signed for Huddersfield and then Shelbourne.

Hard to deny Freddy Eastwood's initial impact on the Blues... 7.7 seconds is a tough record to crack

And for the record, If any of you have seen Collymore on MTV's Cribs he comes across as a real t%$&*r... Also has tons of Football shirts hung around the house, and not ONE Southend Shirt...

Dear departed Uncle Vic was probably too tight to let him have one.

Maybe whoever nicked his shirt off him at the Luton game in 93 should offer it back to him provided it gets pride of place next to his England shirt?

Donut

As the signature at the bottom says "the start of a love affair", well it was Donut that kicked off the comeback that night. He came off the bench in the 2nd half, with us 2 down, within 5 mins he managed to get himself booked, win and score a penalty. He gave it his all that night. He wasn't the best but he just had that something that made we want to go again.

Danny Gay and Damon Searle! Have Danny's glove and I love Damon!

Gary "Psycho" Bennett. This guy was one of a kind - always involved and probably the most combative striker we've had in my 21 years of watching The Blues.

Stan gets the top award but Benno was who started it all off for me. Him McDonut, Martin, Butler and Clarky made us one of the toughest lower division teams of the late 80's.

For me too. 1st game I saw was against my Dad's team Aldershot in April 1969. The mighty Billy Best scored a hattrick and I was hooked on the Shrimpers from that day

Has'nt been put forward yet but for me, Mike Marsh was the most consistently good performer. Used to rule the centre of the park and was always 100% with his penalties.

Christ how could I forget to mention Marshy - £500k of quality!

WS
At last... Thought no one would mention the Great Man's name.

As hinted at in Leeboy's thread-starter, most people's favourite player is one they saw when young/first started watching. I can't choose between Alan Moody and Big Bill Garner. Radio 5 had a 'phone in asking people who their sporting ledgend/inspiration was. Amidst all the Olympic Athletes, Pele, Cassius Clay, etc one guy, a Chelsea fan, called in and nominated Bill Garner. Class!

There's a Turkish bloke in my team who is a Galatasaray fan but says he has never heard of Marsh!

Bloody cheek I say - he's probably their best ever player!

When I was a lad I used to worship Spinner and Scully, but overall it would have to be Stan, shame he didn't stay longer really!

That man is an absolute legend. My rose tinted glasses never saw Super Roy give anything less than 100% (though the effort was sometimes aimed in the wrong direction). Rarely beaten to the ball in the air and provider of goals for so many others.

I'm struggling to think of anyone that hasn't already been mentioned.

When you look at the squad of 90/91 I don't remember anyone in that team being a boo-target for the terraces. Interesting that out of the current squad there's only one or two that manage to achieve that and give me anywhere near the same kind of buzz of that great season.

For the record only Maher, Prior and Eagle and Guttridge of the current squad cut the mustard for me. I see nothing in any of the rest of them that couldn't be picked up easily and cheaply in the lower divisions. No doubt I'll upset some Eastwood and Barrett fans but I'm sticking to my views. Neither of those two have performed consistently enough at this level yet.

It's a no-brainer for me: Chris Powell. A man who embodies everything that is good in football - totally gifted, and totally humble. Awesome. We were so, so lucky to have him.

Next fave is Sammy. The best keeper I've ever seen at the Hall, on either side. "Ooooooh it's Sammy" is probably one of my happiest and earliest memories of the Hall.

My random top 10 looks something like this:

1. Chrissy Powell
2. Paul "Sammy" Sansome
3. Peter Butler - the gold standard for SUFC midfielders.
4. "Ooh" Bretty Angell - his winning header against Brum was the moment I became hooked.
5. Leo Roget - nutter, always gave it all, shame that an early injury cost him a potentially golden career.
6. Ricky Otto - pure joy with the ball at his feet.
7. Freddy Eastwood - ORM is, of course, wrong; and besides, his goal at Cardiff will make me smile forever.
8. Paul Byrne - the gold standard for "wayward genius" at Roots Hall... his goal against Norwich will also make me smile forever.
9. Steve Tilson - Mr. Southend, perhaps even more so off the pitch.
10. David Webb - for taking us to the promised land.

Probably a bit of an oversight, that...

Byrne loses out, and Stan takes his place, I reckon...
