No because sometimes he did a effective job. Well effective compared to Webb, Richards, Jones, Marney, Darby, Foley et al.

Quote[/b] (BoyWonder2 @ Feb. 22 2005,15:18)]That hasn't been stated by the guy that started this thread. Yes that makes sense and based on that Alderton wouldn't be in the team, but I'm going by what the guy that started this thread said. Sorry.
True... but then I quibbled with the guy who started the thread as to the basis on which he set it out.  Is this a list of the eleven worst players since we dropped to Div 3; or is it the "worst SUFC Team"?

The reason I ask that is that, surely, those two things above are most certainly not one and the same...

Yer but Rio Alderton was inexcusably bad and therefore I had to put him in the side. And I was going by what I've seen. I couldn't think of anyone else in central midfield that was that bad. Can you? Bearing in mind I've been watching since the Kingstonian FA Cup match.

O and I'll put Neil Jenkins in my side on the left on midfield.

Come off it. Surely you can't think Maher is one of the worst central midfielders we have had since we dropped into this division? He vision, range of passing, work rate, grit, determination etc are top notch. We are a better side with Maher in it than when he is missing. Maher was the best player at Cardiff for us.

The very same. His not an England international. He represents the National Team XI anyways

No one has been as bad in midfield as Rio Alderton; but people who have had stinkers since then?

Not many to choose from, but I'll go for Ian Selley. For someone of such supposed skill, he consistently flattered to deceive, and we always looked rather lightweight with him in midfield.

Harsh, maybe - but the only other alternative is (as a midfielder) Lewis Hunt... who is as poor a midfielder as he is talented a right back, IMHO.

Since I don't want Lewis to go in the worst XI, that's why I've gone for Selley.

Matt

do what, maher is a waste of space and i really do think he is one of the worst players i have ever seen since the 15 years i have been goin blues

I can see what your getting at but I always rated Ian Selley as a player. Him and Maher in the middle looked very good. Both had a fantastic range of passing. And I couldn't put Hunt in because it would be harsh having him in the Worst SUFC XI when his been outstanding this season.

ORM will not be happy about that and nor will anybody on here. Maher is class. Nuff said!
If you were basing it on Maher's performances only in the period of 97-99, there would be a strong case for including him in thie side... He was diabolical back then...

But the turnaround in form since then has been nothing short of spectacular.

Hmm... clearly you didn't go to the Col Ewe game away, in which - to reverse entirely what you're saying - Kevin Maher gave (IMHO) the finest performance by someone in a Southend shirt in a decade. He was magnificent that day.
