Question Worst gift (wedding or otherwise) ever recieved.

You might not think much of the Next vouchers Dave, but if you actually go into one of the bigger stores and look at their household stuff you might be surprised. I'm one that also dislikes giving money, and actually if I've had to then I usually give less than I would if buying something specific. I have no problem with people asking for vouchers for, say Debenhams or John Lewis or something - to me that's completely different to asking for money. It might be a fine line, but there is a difference.

Naff presents? This was a present for ME remember, 4 homemade lap trays - one for each of us.......theory was nice, the kids drew pictures to "represent" each of us, then they got made into lap trays. Guess who gets most benefit? Nah, not me!

I cannot see the difference between buying someone £50 worth of John Lewis vouchers (Which they can only use in John Lewis) or giving them £50 worth of cash (which can be used anywhere).

I HATE it when I'm bought aftershave that I haven't asked for; I must have £200 worth of fragrance that smells of sh!t that I don't want.

Anyone after some Old Spice or Brut?

I am so glad that you didnt say "a box of clotted creams from Devon".

Mrs DtS may never have recovered.....

PS - See you at football later
PPS - Im going to score again tonight...

But Dave, people normally ask for vouchers because they like a range of stuff in those shops and the vouchers can then enable them to go and choose pieces from that range, whether it be kitchenware, bedding, soft furnishings or whatever. Blimey, I remember making my wedding list, cutting out loads of pictures, stock numbers and stuff from catalogues and things to give people all the information they needed to be able to decide how much they wanted to spend, and where to go to buy the item; the list being sent to everyone all over the place and taking forever! So much easier nowaday when you can just have a wedding list at a selected store, the vouchers back that principle up. Cash could be blown on a takeaway!

I have to say I'm the same with Christmas - I don't do cash at Christmas, friends' kids get vouchers.

Playing devils advocate if the kids want to blow it on a take-away then whats the issue? Would you rather they blew it on a toy they didnt use much?

Always ask what shop they want the vouchers for, that way they can put it towards a bigger purchase in say Game, or get clothes or whatever. Might seem a bit pedantic, but that's just the way we do it! I'm a hard mother, if mine get cash at Christmas it goes in their building society account - they'll thank me for it when they're 18, which for my son is next year!

You'll learn that kids ALWAYS want something, and that gets more and more expensive and conversely usually smaller and smaller as they get older!

My mother-in law brought on of her grand daughters a jar of pickled fruit the other xmas....

That said it was a nice jar

Not a worst wedding gift or anything but i managed to pawn off possibly one of the worst pictures ever to someone. It was just a dead tree with black-birds on it, the look on the grooms face.

Without wanting to seem ungrateful we received two pretty rubbish presents. My uncle who lives in a rather large house on my wife's favourite road in Hampstead Garden Suburb (she grew up there) bought us a £20 toaster.

However, that wasn't the worst. My aunt came over from San Francisco for the wedding with a present that cost her a small fortune. She commissioned a local artist to do a piece especially for myself and my wife. Apparently he spent hours researching what to paint, and the finished product was very delicate and needed special attention on the aeroplane.

It actually arrived by courier when we returned from our honeymoon which meant that my wife and I opened this present in private, and thank god we did because we burst out laughing. It could only be described as a paper mache bowl similar to the ones I did when I was at junior school, and the paintings around the side look like something I really did do in junior school. The idea was the you put dried flowers (supplied) in it, so I opened it up to put the flowers in to see that the whole thing had been "built" around the bottom half of an old 2l coke bottle!

Thankfully when we moved house it got damaged so when she visited in March we didn't have to put it out for her!

Two years ago my sister got me a bottle of perfume for Christmas.

Being slightly taken-aback I didn't say anything. She apologised about six months later when the penny dropped.

Who is the present for??!!! Shocking!!

But they get enough other stuff, and having almost three grand in their accounts now is far better in the long run.

I don't think that is shocking, my family always refused to give me money for xmas and the only way they will give me money for birthday is if i can actually tell them what i wanted to spend it on.

I hate little novelty presents that are of no real use, apart from filling junk drawers. Unless you know someone is definitely going to use it, or wants it, vouchers are the way ahead. I dread to think how much money has been wasted over the years when people have boughtg presents that dont get used.. Thats not being ungrateful, just practical..
