Question Worst gift (wedding or otherwise) ever recieved.

DTS

The Business
Without wanting to mention it again obviously Mrs DtS (The lucky biatch) and I got married just over a week ago.

Wedding lists are always a thorney issue. However Mrs DtS and I decided that we would ask for cash for anyone that wanted to kindly give us something. At first we felt a little uneasy with it but to be honest we have always brought anything we have wanted. Most people (Thanks Desert Shrimper and Dad of DtS) kindly obliged.....

However a few people decided that cash was not right and gave us vouchers instead. Now I am sure this was a ploy to get rid of their unwanted vouchers but beggers cant be choosers so fair call we gladly accepted them too.

(As a sub plot I must add the guy with the dodgey guts/special food request turned up as scruffy as I have ever seen and gave us £20 worth of Next Vouchers !!! Dont mean to be ungrateful but what a silly gift. I only wear lables and the Mrs never goes next). I will get some sovks with them I think.

Anyway one of Mrs DtS friend decided to ignore our request for cash and give us a picture. Now I personally think you should give the bride/groom what they ask for within reason but if not then vouchers are cool.

No word of a lie its horrifc. Its kind of a tree that has no leaves with a load of black birds on it. Art is such a personal thing anyway I dont know how you can think about buying to for someone else but this particular picture is so grim. It would not look out of place in a morgue. If I get chance I will post a snap up here so you can see what I mean.

Just wondering if anyone else has had an equally naff present as a gift.

Having been to many weddings I hate just giving money, it seems to me to be not personal at all...I would rather people say "don't bother with gifts" we just want you there at our wedding. We as you have said "can buy what we need"..It seems to me you are saying we cant think of anything at all so just give us your money. So what the guy gave you Next vouchers at least he gave you something, it is not his fault you only wear designer labels.

PS: bin the picture..:)

Well never been married (as yet), but I remember as a kid my mum's friend/neighbour bought me a pen where the ink was supposed to smell of fruit.

But it didn't. It absolutely stunk to high heaven. My homework would have smelt like absolute *****. I still thanked her through gritted teeth and quickly dumped the pen in the nearest bin.

And I'm sure a goth like Moridin will buy the picture :D

Or on the flip side we could ask for a load of plates, pillow cases we dont really want or I can spend £20 on some ****ing socks...

Or someone can give us cash which we plan to use on a holiday once the daugther is old enough to enjoy it.

You should see the **** my nan puts in her annual "lucky dip" for the Christmas festivities.

A tin of mixed nuts, 5 months past the sell by date.
A pair of socks that dont match.
A diary for last year.
A DVD that only plays on American players.
A calendar for last year.
A random book written in an even more random language.

They are just a few of the beauties I have picked up over the years.

Many years ago, a Norwegian friend of my parents knitted me and my sister a jumper each - traditional Norwegian style. I ran a mile the second I saw it and although i don't have a picture of the monstrosity, this isn't too far away from what it was like...

In 1997, I made the mistake of mentioning to my mum that I liked South Park. It was a passing mention, nothing more. That Christmas she bought me pretty much every single bit of merchandise available with the South Park logo on it. I'm not kidding, it was like she looted the studios.

South Park mug, South Park pants, South Park gloves and a South Park album. An album?! In what social situation would you ever have cause to put the South Park theme tune on? For the love of God, it was awful.

I got bought a home beer brewing kit once, which I have to say I thought was a pretty sh*t present. I like drinking beer - but it's not as if I've turned sixty-four, donned a cardigan, put sandals & socks on and grown a beard, and thus have nothing else to do with my time than brew beer (which will undoubtedly taste like chemical p*ss) in the garden shed that I don't even own...

:thump:

I received a bottle of 'Golf' aftershave (whith novelty golf ball bottle top) in 1981 - when I was 9.

We said to guests/friends/family that if they wanted to get a gift (which we did not expect at all) we would appreciate it if they would buy a voucher from Dyce Caravans to put towards the purchase of a rather expensive caravan. We ended up having half the caravan paid for by friends/family and guests.

The good thing is that we use it regularly and have a permanent reminder of the generosity of our friends and family every time we are way in it.

Resists the urge to cheekily edit this...;)

thats is a great album (chef aid yes?)

On DTS point, i agree, i suppose you could always put the picture in the raffle for the SZ new season do?

I like the idea one of my friends had, they set up a deal with the travel agent, where instead of asking for cash, you could phone up the agent, and pay money off of there honeymoon. It saves the scenario where people dont like giving cash, because you are sort of buying them something they really do want.

You might not think much of the Next vouchers Dave, but if you actually go into one of the bigger stores and look at their household stuff you might be surprised. I'm one that also dislikes giving money, and actually if I've had to then I usually give less than I would if buying something specific. I have no problem with people asking for vouchers for, say Debenhams or John Lewis or something - to me that's completely different to asking for money. It might be a fine line, but there is a difference.

Naff presents? This was a present for ME remember, 4 homemade lap trays - one for each of us.......theory was nice, the kids drew pictures to "represent" each of us, then they got made into lap trays. Guess who gets most benefit? Nah, not me!

I HATE it when I'm bought aftershave that I haven't asked for; I must have £200 worth of fragrance that smells of sh!t that I don't want.

Anyone after some Old Spice or Brut?
