World Cup stars at Southend

Uncle Leo

Seeing Sodje at the Hall on Saturday got me thinking. How many (if any) Southend players over the years have played in the World Cup Finals during their careers?

At least three (player) managers - Moore, Whelan and Martin - have.

Mike Lapper? pronounced like 'Mickey' i think but not sure how his first name is spelt. i'm sure he played for the US

Was Mike Lapper ever in a USA World Cup Finals squad - it's a possibility he may have played a game.

The only other one may be (and he would have left the club by then) Derek Spence. He might possibly have made the Northern Ireland squad for the 1982 Finals in Spain. He didn't play in any of the games if he did make the squad.

Don't remember Alvin Martin playing at World Cup finals. I think he was part of the squad prior to Spain 82 but was dropped in favour of Russell Osman and I am sure he did not play in Mexico 86 or Italia 90.

I haven't checked that, but going by my fading memory.

Alvin Martin was ruled out of the WC82 because of injury but went to WC86 and played against Paraguay before being dropped.

Thanks - I knew he did not play in 82 or 90, but was not sure about 86.

Kevin Maher will be the next one

Raise an eye to this one as it cannot be serious, as he was a Spaniard via North London.

he played for Barcelona though in the under-19s, and is now out there scouting for Arsene.

Interesting to hear he's now a scout at Arsenal.

For some reason I always thought he was Italian...

Was only a kid but was so excited at the time that we'd signed someone from Barcelona - only to find out he was infact absolute dump!!!

Legend......

I believe we've got 4... Ray Crawford (England) - in the 1960s, Mike Masters (USA) in the 80s, Mark Kinsella (Ireland) about 1997-2002, and Greg Halford (England), 2007-

spot the cheeky edit

Anglo-Spanish of Galician origin. I know his brother Eddie very well as he is my equivalent down in Torrevieja (chairman of the international supporters club) ...
