Wimpy

Uncle Leo

This cook is an anti-semite
Two Wimpy restaurants in my area have closed, one to be replaced by a Jenny's and the other TBC.

Have they gone bust totally or are they just dying a slow death?

The vanilla milkshakes and the fact that all the staff in the Rayners Lane branch were at least 60 will be greatly missed.

The 2 in Southend and the one in Lakeside are still going strong.

I still remember going in the one in Southend when I was 8 and getting a free 'Espana 82' World Cup badge

I love Wimpy. Nothing better than a sit-down 'on a plate' dinner. I'll never forget my nan taking us for a Wimpy when we were kids, when she would bemuse staff by ordering a cheese roll. In this respect, I like to think my nan was an early pioneer of the anti-globalization movement.

Given their lack of growth I think Wimpy were early pioneers of the anti-globalization movement.

Has anyone here ever sampled the Wimpy Frankfurter in a bun?

It reminds me of when I used to come in from the pub and make a sandwich out of a whole tin of Ye Olde Oak hot dogs.

My company trades with Wimpy but not the restaraunt business.

I would assume that all the restaraunts are franchises, which may well explain the closure of certain branches.

For me, Wimpy is synonymous with the Brown Derby, the Knickerbocker Glory, and Victoria Circus (*) in the early 1980s.

This may explain why they're not doing that well.

(*Plaza...?! What's that all about, eh?)

aah, the 'Bender'.

possibly the only time you can use that expression now

Brown Derby is the dessert of kings. Fact.

Alas, even Wimpy have felt the force of Political Correctness, the Bender is now just the 'Wimpy Frankfurter'.

Although full marks to them for declining to go down the 'Vegeburger' route for their vegetarian option and calling it simply 'Quorn in a bun'

I remember it as a kid. All very exciting to go to the Wimpy in Vic Circus and have a bender brunch.

I hear you can have much the same thing at the public lavs at the London Rd entrance to Chalkwell Park nowadays.

I have always found the most enjoyable burgers to be those purchased in early hours after a few beers from a burger van or similar.

They normally contain unorthodox ingredients such as a fried egg.

I would imagine that the worst burgers are those Goblin tinned burgers in gravy you see in the tinned meat aisle in supermarkets.

I'm no stranger to the darker side of meat products but I have never tried these. Can anyone give us a report?

Cheers.

I suspect that anyone who has is no longer alive to tell the tale.

But surely some students on here had a mate who tried them (and died horribly from gastric poisioning hours later, thus conveniently getting out of a 9am sociology lecture)?

closest I've got to those is Campbells meatballs in gravy - probably the same thing but in circular form....

Spherical.

Burgers are circular.

I always liked Wimpys. Nice burgers and they often came up with entertaining names for their products (the aforementioned 'Big Bender' being a case in point)

Cylindrical.

I recall reading a couple of months ago that they're just closing the less profitable outlets. Sadly, this includes the Upminster branch - was right next to the station and, as someone else has said, you can't beat a sit down meal.

Rather fond of the Campbell's meatballs myself, especially the ones in tomato sauce. Tin of those and some Tesco value spaghetti was very much a staple in my student days.

Probably goes some way to explaining why I'm a fat b'stard now...
