Obvious one liner set-up aside, I really don't think there should be any expectation of play-offs. If we are losing money anywhere near the figure Tara Brady says we are, and considering the expected downturn in season ticket money and attendances, budgets will I'm sure be on much more of a shoestring and we simply won't compete for signings against more settled and better run clubs.

Mid table was a fairly decent achievement this season. Emulating it should be the expectation and anything above that a bonus.

My thoughts exactly - not unambitious - just being realistic - will Corr have such a productive second year especially if Grant, Hall, and Ferdinand go

Inevitably expectations will go up for next season. However if the budget for next season is being cut, it'll be tough to really mount a challenge, especially with some of the 'big' sides coming down from lg1. Automatics is out of the question, but a playoff challenge is should be possible.

We were only 7 points off from 7th this year! So it isn't completely un realistic! Especially as Plymouth will have to release everybody! I definitely do fancy automatic promotion next season, atleast!

Coincidentally the same number of points as we dropped against the relegated two clubs.

FWIW I'm still in disbelief that Barnet haven't gone down. We played them three times and they were abysmal three times.

'At least' points towards the very minimum you would expect...so if automatic promotion is the very least you will expect, what better than that is there? :stunned:

They were woeful but they got a manager in the shape of Grazioli that inspired and motivated the players

Heard it from the horses mouth to-day that sales of season cards are a bit down compared with time last year. If Sturrock`s budget is linked to sales it is not good news but perhaps not surprising.

Anyone who expected last seasons numbers to be equalled (or bettered) needs to get a grip on reality. Everyone i know in all wakes of life, are experiencing less disposable income for reasons we are all aware of. I believe more fans are prepared to pick the games they will attend, simply because of the negative tactics various teams have displayed when playing here and the games have been rubbish. Also there is rightly so a feeling of negativity still hovering with the club, regarding cash flow and monies available to strengthen the team. Hopefully the team will prove these fans wrong, and when half season tickets become available at the end of the year, sales of these will be higher than in the last couple of seasons.

but didn't we sign 10+ players in a 2/3 week period . How would we have possibly paid all these signing on fees all hitting us at the same time ?

We didn't. We paid inflated wage packets instead I believe. Hence the need to bring that down this season.

Okay, in the interests of naivety ...

A free transfer generally involves a signing-on fee, usually linked to a certain percentage of their annual wage. If the signing club can't afford that then by and large a higher salary will be negotiated, giving the club a sort of 'pay in instalments' option.

Agents, generally speaking, will also receive a fee for their involvement.

A scout may also receive a bonus, over and above their expenses, should the club sign a player upon their recommendation.

There does, therefore, need to be some of the annual budget put aside for signings, even if there is no transfer fee at all.

My understanding is that at least part of the signing on fee is deferred. You'll sometimes see a transfer where a fee has been agreed and the player has agreed terms with the buying club but the transfer is held up as the player still has to sort out money with the selling club - this is usually the signing on fee and if the player has requested a transfer he forfeits that money.

Yeah, often signing on fees are paid out annually over the course of a contract. However, and I may be wrong, I don't think that a signing on fee is always paid out when a player is signed. It's something that the player can negotiate and may even be standard but I wouldn't have thought that it would be mandatory. At the end of the day it's just a guy taking a job.

Sorry YB, but it was 8 points we dropped against the 2 relegated teams, 5 against Stockport, 3 against Lincoln
