Its a lot better then you'd think . Ubuntu is a good distribution , or you can go for Mandrak or Red Hat fro a bought version (about £30-40 ). Most things linux now has no problem dealing with . Sadly musci making and development is still lacking . But pretty much everything else is covered (even games !)

Its worth perciving with as wifi is normal so open (he says typing this on a open but non broadcarst AP !)

I realise that but I wanted to keep the post to a basic level, so for a start any type of encryption with 128bit is what you should aim for. So there was no real need to go into the different types of encryption out there

WEP is fine to get started as most devices can handle this, however we all know that a hacker can break a WEP encryption in approx 15mins, so we should be looking to use WPA. However from my experience not every home based kit can handle WPA, so it all depend on what your kit can handle.

For the home user would they really want to set up a Radius Authentication Server? I do not think so. Even if it is the open source variety, does your Joe user want to go to such lengths?

These posts are not to prove who knows more than who but to help out a fellow SZer with a basic wifi query, as mentioned in my post when and if anyone needs more help it can be taken off line and dealt with.
