Why England is the greatest country in the world

Nicely worded to get around the fact that most of the best authors etc are American not English.

We'll be living under Marmite?

Ugggh MArmite , thought actually im idiffernet to it but then im quite liberal ...
I was always led to believe the greatest authours of the 19th-20th Century were Irish (Wilde , Joyce etc ??)

Are you sure on that one?

Shakespeare, Chaucer, Tolkein, Conan Doyle, Kipling, Graham Greene, Du Maurier, Bunyan, Agatha Christie, Bronte Sisters, Jane Austen, Ian Fleming, Orwell, Pinter, Alan Bennett, Dickens, need I go on

Fairly sure.

With maybe an apology to the Irish (Swift in particular) as Osymandus says.

Other than Greene and Orwell, everyone else on that list is crap.

I'd have worded it differently (ie wouldn't say the others were crap), but that's essentially my view. I love Greene and Orwell's work but could live without the others you mention.

I don't think that matches up to American literature and the likes of Heller, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Palahuniuk, Kerouac, Ellis, Yates, Fitzgerald, Vonnegut, Kesey, Thompson, Faulkner, Ford, Wolfe (Tom not Virginia), Twain, Melville etc etc

We are a great example of a multicultural society where all races can live together in harmony.

And we lead the world in binge drinking.

Hmmm.. I am a fairly lefty liberal, with a number of black and Asian relatives, and I can't see multiculturalisim leading anywhere but huge trouble eventually. The way forward has to be integration in the long term - which doesn't mean losing all your cultural identity (Polish and Jewish communities, for instance) but does mean valuing your Britishness first and foremost.

Your opinion obviously, but how do you justify your statement?

Shakespeare - tiresome 'in jokes' only of amusement to geriatric English teachers.

Chaucer - what way is that to structure a book?

Tolkein - pixies, fairies and jewellery - no thanks.

Conan Doyle - John Mortimer did it a lot better.

Kipling - cake maker.

Du Maurier - sounds French.

Bunyan - literary equivalent of a veruca.

Christie - whodunnit? A new character I'll introduce in the penultimate chapter - that's who.

Bronte Sisters & Jane Austen - fatuous crap for middle aged ladies.

Fleming - trashy spy novels made into decent movies.

Pinter - pinko commie ****.

Bennett - northern monkey.

Dickens - dull, dull and duller.

To be fair, A Christmas Carol is the greatest book ever, until Scrooge turns nice, when it becomes utter *****.

If Chas Dickens had made Scrooge worse after the ghosts visit, it would have been awesome.
Just imagining him smacking Tiny Tim around the head with his crutch is giving me a chubby.

Kind Regards

Or Tiny Tims crutch as fire wood
