Spot on. And if Smiths distribution was like Bentleys there would be more criticism. And Flahavan was too small.

Bentley's distribution yesterday was very good. Released Straker with an accurate long throw on more than one occasion, just a shame Straker did jack all with it

Or it could be, as pointed out on the match thread that

the lack of aerial ability elsewhere in the side [is because] we've prioritised players who are good on the deck?

Under the previous regime it was a deliberate tactic to ensure we had plenty of height and defensive awareness. Mohsni was converted from centre-half to left-wing, both Kane Ferdinand and Mkandaweare were converted centre-halves playing in central midfield, at left-back we had variously Chris Barker, Luke Prosser, Peter Gilbert who all played centre-back, the legendary Big Bad Barry Corr was great in the air and could fill in more than adequately at centre-half in emergency as we found out last year.

This year we've gone in a different direction and it's only natural that this side of our game won't be as strong.

In this team we have BBBC who attacks the ball, Phillips when not injured and Prosser to an extent. Thompson doesn't look particularly strong in the air for a centre-half, at least at this stage of his career.

That makes us vulnerable at set pieces as there are only a couple of players opposition need to block. With Corr subbed and Phillips injured a team only really needs to get someone to nudge or block the path of Prosser and we'll be in all sorts of difficulty at set pieces and it'll be reactively easy to get mismatches for teams who emphasise aerial ability and have good set piece delivery. I'd have thought that was all fairly obvious stuff, so I'm not sure why you are seeking to scapegoat a much improved player you have hardly seen play.

When I were a lad, (In the good old Days), my Sports teacher said that for corners, always have a defender on both corners of the Six Yard box. First to deal with a short or long corner, but also to stop a free header from those area's. Perfectly shown by Wycombe's second goal from the corner.

Its not just us who concede at dead ball situation. Idid a rough check at half time, and found more than half the goals scored in div2 were dead ball goals. It don't make right to keep conceding in this way, but at this level mistakes are made, and goals scored in this fashion.

Apparently 60% of all goals scored are from set pieces. That's why Paul Sturrock liked every one back to defend. I know it's defensive, but it worked.

I wasn't at either of the away games so can't comment specifically, but my issue with zonal marking in general is that it allows the attacking player to get the jump on you. Whilst you're standing relatively still policing your zone, an attacking player can attack the ball at speed, and a player running at speed is going to jump higher than a player that is standing relatively still, which gives them an advantage.

Very disappointed how lazy Corr looked for their 1st goal on Saturday, I am a big fan of his but I was watching him before and during their goal and it wasn't acceptable.

Per my earlier comment on the 1st goal Phil Brown highlights Bentley should have done better.

"“If I’ve analysed the first goal a million times (on Saturday), I believe my goalkeeper was probably too deep and we spoke
about that at length"

Again those people that would slaughter Smith for the same thing seem to be far more forgiving and even hunting for other people to blame for conceding it. Fans eh ?:whistling:

As a unit players need to take responsibility keep a better line and dont defend to deep give the keeper room to dominate. we keep a line and immediately drop on bentleys toes. get a man and its your job to make sure you win the battle there are to many players shying out of responsibilty be vocal clear your lines and get out.

Im a southend united fan and back anyone who pulls on the shirt too many on here bite there tongue when it comes to criticising bentley if it was smith the abuse would be rolling in. Double standards.

Indeed.

Im happy with Bentley and rather he was in goal than Smith now, but it does highlight how people become "anti" a particular player and criticise every fault yet when a different player does the same dont even mention it.

Just one word NO PHILLIPS.

Sure Phillips would help but he isnt going to win ever single ball on his own.

Again its trying to hang an issue (if there even is one) on one thing. Phillips would help, Bentley coming for a cross would help, maybe not playing zonal at times would help. Its a combination of things.

If you read the excellent report on the Q&A session with Phil Brown, you would know that Corr was not 100% so I'm not sure that it was being lazy, more likely a case of carrying some niggling injuries.
