Cadette was better than both. Cadette best ever striker

It's quite simple really - the fans who have voted for Freddy clearly became Shrimpers sometime AFTER the 1992/3 season....those who were ALREADY Shrimpers during that time have voted accordingly like me

Collymore is the best player I've ever seen in a Southend shirt.

Eastwood is quality and will only get better, he could become one of the best players we've ever had if he stays around long enough!

To put this another way, if we all accept that Eastwood is not yet the finished article (but, Mein Gott, how good would he be then ?). How many other SUFC forwards could you list that still rank higher than Eastwood in your eyes ?

Five that come to mind straight away.

Angell
Crown
Cadette
D Parker
Phillips

Strong mention for Tesfaye ?

Collymore's name must be easier to spell though

No debate, Colly all the way. The third best player ever to wear an SUFC shirt after Maher and Donut.

If Freddy continues to work hard there is no doubt he can become a great player but I've lost count of the number of lower division players over the years that haven't cut it at the highest level, and not just from SUFC (though it is a very good time to mention Cadette and Angell).

Third? C'mon I know you love McDonough and Maher but said in jest surely.....SURELY.......ORM?!!!

Stanley is the greatest player I've seen in nearly 19 years as a Shrimper, I'm also almost certain to NEVER see a better player in a Blues shirt and I honestly believe that - it's sad to say that I won't ever have the pleasure of seeing another Stanley playing for MY club but I fear it's true

Still lets not look at the negatives, lets all be thankful we were privileged to witness such a great talent playing for Southend United, he single-handedly kept an awful side up that season. I've read his book more than a few times and he has only nice things to say about us - do you know that final game of the season against Luton was one of the two games (the 1st Liverpool-Newcastle classic being the other) he says he wouldn't swap for anything in his career? Also if you haven't read the book you may not know Stan INSISTED he play in the final games of the following season after Forest were promoted to do all he could to get his 25th goal of the season to trigger a further £250k payment to this club. Frank Clark and the Forest board wanted to "rest" him after he'd scored his 24th to save themselves the money but Stan played and DID get his goal. Personally I do have sympathy for those who became Shrimpers after 92/93 as they missed out big time, Freddy's one of the best young strikers outside the Premier$hite but Collymore was in a different class. Some younger fans may baulk at the previous comparison to Henry at Arsenal but for Southend United Stan Collymore was exactly that kind of talisman.

Stan Collymore = LEGEND

I know he's an occasional visitor to Shrimperzone (and a very welcome one) - you may want to mention this thread to him

I only became a real shrimper in 2002, despite watching my first game in 93, and have always been amazed at the way older fans (sorry no offence intended

) talk about collymore! I would have loved to see someone of that quality at the hall

Wasn't a supporter in the days of Stanley, but from the goals on the DVD, they were pure class, i can't argue who is better, but i hope one day that Freddy goes on to the same level as Stanley

The distinct lack of any decent English strikers beyond Rooney & Owen certainly does him no harm.
Hmm, I wonder what Mr W. Hill reckons. Might have to ask him about that.

For the record Roy McDonough is my favourite all time player, not the most skilful by a long chalk, but I never saw him give less than 100% (and he had some shocking games).

But of course I am joking ! I still wouldn't have Colly as my number 1 player, neither would I have Maher. That honour rests with Paul Clark. An ocean of calmness when all around him was panicking.

As far as your earlier comments go I have been warming to Freddy for some weeks (and I have posted as such on here). All I ever wanted him to prove was that he could do it at a decent level against decent opposition. Even Drewe Broughton can score against the likes of Torquay.

has to be Collymore, by far and away the best player I've seen at Roots Hall and he played for us when we were in the old 1st Division. Also the last decent FA |Cup run we had was all down to Collymore.
If Freddie stays with us next season in the Championship and does well only then can we really compare him to Collymore.

Ah yes the memories of Sir Stanley's two goals at Huddersfield will always stay with me!

You realise it was 13 years ago this weekend that Southend went up to Sunderland and Collymore ripped them apart in a 4-2 win?

Hmmmm, talk about mixed emotions. Standing in with the Sunderland fans (the family on my father's side are local born dyed-in-the-wool mackems), I had to hide my arm-waving and shouting with mock anger at Sunderland's defence.

In truth, they hardly noticed me. The murmur in the Fulwell End was along the lines of "F*** me. Who the F*** is that? Collymore? Who? He's taking the p***, man." They were amazed, bitter and impressed all at once.

When Freddy can do that against the likes of Birmingham, Sunderland and Leeds next season we'll have a clearer picture.

Stan by a million miles, quite simply god...........

you could compare Eastwood to Angell, Crown , Cadette etc
but dont even think of putting him in the same sentence as Stan

my feeling is like many of the older generation, that Stan was the greatest striker ever to wear the blue shirt, also if his mind didnt play tricks on him he would without doubt have been the greatest stiker this country had ever seen. He would have blown Shearer into oblivion. He had it all pace, power and could wealk the ball from 100 miles away into the top corner, check out the collymore collection on vhs if its still available.

Alas, I was only round for one of those five - Ooh Bretty Angell.  How can you possibly compare Bretty and Freddy?  It's difficult to think of two players whose style was less alike.

Bretty is still, without question, the best header of a ball I've ever seen in a Southend shirt.  If only Stan had Bretty's heading ability, then Stan would have been the total footballer - an English Pele.  Even without that, of course, Stan was in a class all of his own - indeed, Cockles has summed up in 30 words exactly what I would say in 300 words!

laugh.gif

Bretty was also a wonderful finisher - a deeply underrated talent.  We have had other great finishers in recent years - notably Carruthers and Constantine - but people have been fairly content to see them leave.  However, you only need to conjure up names like (it must be said) Tes Bramble to know that the ability to finish is a skill which not all forwards have... and if they can't finish, then they're pretty cr@p in my book.

But was Bretty more gifted than Freddy?  Nope.  Freddy is still the most talented forward we've seen since Stan, that's for sure.

Tes gets a mention as the 12th most talented forward since I started supporting in 1991.  Above him in the pecking order are:

Stan
Freddy
Bretty
Goat
Benji
Mooney
Boere

Hunt
Carruthers
Constantine
Thomson

On no objective basis - either in terms of overall contribution, ball skills or goals scored (given quality of defences) - is it possible to rate Tes Bramble higher than any of the above.

Sammy McCrory would have to be on that list as well. I'd mention tes in strong terms, but that's not quite the same thing...
