I think its a cross between Dave's Gills and Napsters Donny personally....
I cant think which is a scummier area....Might just go for Donny.
Surely you've got to give it to Gillingham?
They're nearer the sea than Doncaster!
Their record attendance was in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup, like us, whereas Donny's was in the 3rd Division North.
The ground capacity at Priestfield (11400) is closer to the Hall's than either Belle Vue or Donny's new place.
Priestfield has been converted to an all-seater stadium by a mixture of new build and slapping seats on terraces, much like the Hall. Priestfield is also slap bang in the middle of a long-standing residential area, all I remember from Belle Vue is a gravelly car park, a main road and a racecourse!
As has already been mentioned, the considerable number of players who've played for both clubs, and Peter Taylor who's managed both.
But most interesting of all (stop yawning!) is looking at the comparable league histories. Doncaster Rovers joined the league in the Second Division in 1901. They failed to gain re-election a couple of times, but went on to enjoy further spells in the Second Division and of course spent a further five seasons out of the Football League between 1998 and 2003.
Gillingham, however, entered the Football League in the inaugural season of the Third Division in 1920, the same as us. OK, they spent five seasons outside of the Football League either side of the Second World War, but they were otherwise like us a Division 3/4 team, until they entered the second tier for the very first time in their history just three years after we were relegated from that level for the first time.
Here are the number of seasons the clubs have spent in the various tiers since they entered the Football League:
DONCASTER 1st - 0; 2nd - 14; 3rd - 30; 4th - 31; NonLg - 19
GILLINGHAM 1st - 0; 2nd - 5; 3rd - 54; 4th - 16; NonLg - 5
SOUTHEND 1st - 0; 2nd - 7; 3rd - 53; 4th - 20; NonLg - 0
So, my conclusion is that we are more closely tied to the Gills than the Rovers!
