Which FL side would you twin us with.

DTS

The Business
In the same way Southend is twinned with Sopot in Poland what football league side do you think has most closely matched us in terms of club size, achievements etc etc.

I am really stuggling on this one as I think we are bigger than a lot of the smaller clubs but not as big as say the likes of QPR, Millwall.

I was thinking maybe Bournemouth?

Doncaster

Similar highest attendance - 37,099 against Hull City in 1948

Can be both good and bad - they hold the record for the most wins in a league season (42 in 1946-47). In 1997-98, Doncaster also set the record for losses in a season, suffering the humiliation of enduring a record 34 league defeats as they finished bottom of Division Three and went into the Football Conference.

They've had dodgy chairmen (cf Anton, Vic)- Chairman Ken Richardson was sent to prison after he tried to set fire to the Belle Vue ground in hope of being able to pay off the club's debts with the insurance money.

They've come back from the dead (cf our years in League 2)

They returned to the league five years later as Conference playoff winners, and were Division Three champions the following season. The 2006-07 season is the club's third successive season in League One.

They've beaten Premiership sides in the Carling Cup (In 2005-06, Doncaster beat two Premiership teams in the League Cup - Manchester City and Aston Villa.)

They've had internationals play for them and had a star player go to Man United - Harry Gregg (cf Harold Halse)

They've been managed by a true footballing legend - Billy Bremner (cf Bobby Moore)

They're in the best form for years

Successive promotions in 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 under the helm of manager Dave Penney has returned them to the Coca Cola League I.

They have a new stadium (almost!)

A new stadium was completed in December 2006 and their first game at their new Keepmoat Stadium was against Huddersfield Town F.C. on New Year's Day, 2007.

Grimsby??? How??????

:thump:

They were the first team I thought of, mainly because our fortunes seemed so entwinned during the early 90s. Both are seaside towns (and I know Southend is nicer than Cleethorpes), both have been to Wembley/Millenium Stadium twice in the same season, both have won the 4th division championship and the 3rd division title on one occasion each and been runners up to both a couple of times, both have yo-yo-ed.

But on further inspection this is harsh on Grimsby. They're twice FA Cup sem-finalists, three times League Cup quarter-finalists. They've twice won division 2 and have a highest top flight finish of 5th.

Thats a very good arguement, but so annoying, as I ****ing hate Donny. I would have probably said Gillingham

Foriegn (dutch) wise I would say Excelsior Rotterdam.

Excelsior are overseen by bigger clubs in the area (Feyenoord, Sparta, ADO...) much like London has with the west ham ****e.

Fanwise southend is bigger, but both clubs have a family atmosphere and will welcome anyone and of course, theres pubs next to the ground :D.
