Cinemas are charged an absolute fortune from the studios and distributors in the States and as Pubey says, they have to pay that whether people go and watch the film or not. On the odd film (Dark Knight, etc) they will end up taking more through the box office than they have to shell out but that's very much the exception.
20 years ago when cinemas had maybe two screens they were in a strong position as they could effectively pick and choose which film they wanted and could cherry pick those offering decent deals. Nowadays they all have 10 screens and there's an expectation that every cinema will screen every blockbuster, which has massively reduced their strength.
