What You wished you had done

I wish I'd lent Bil Gates 10 grand for a 1/4 share in his crappy little start up computer company

I wish I had taken up flying at a younger age so that I could have become an airline pilot rather than just flying as a hobby. It's a damn good hobby though...I went to the Isle of Wight with a friend on Saturday, it took all of an hour to get there!

Now THAT is a hobby. Tell me, whats the average cost and flying hours before you get your license?

I once was a very good goalkeeper. I had a number of trials with pretty big clubs, but Tottenham was my choice. I told every other club that had made me offers of scholarships etc thats where i wanted to go. I spent a week at spurs and was released after they decided i wasn't tall enough. I promptly gave up keeping and took up refereeing as i sort of assumed everyone else would have given up on me. In hindsight i should have continued as i still feel i could have made it.

I wish I could speak Finnish, my mother's native language. I was bilingual up until the age of three but then apparently I started answering in English when my mum spoke to me, so my parents panicked and decided not to go the bilingual route. At the time there were no conclusive studies into the advantages/disadvantages of being bilingual and I was also living in Grimsby, one of the least cosmopolitan areas of the UK, so there was virtually no-one my parents could speak to on the issue.

So now when I see someone effortlessly switching between languages I get very jealous. Obviously I could still learn Finnish if I wanted to but somehow getting external lessons isn't the same as speaking it like a native, which I would have done.

I wish I'd gone to Roots Hall on 1st January 1992 instead of spending it in Norfolk at a mate's new year party.

I wish I'd been better at pulling birds in my late teens / early 20s... I passed up on at least one opportunity which it took me a week to realise that I had in fact been offered on a plate (and I'd misread the signs).

I wish I'd done a languages degree at university instead of law.

I think that's about it... it doesn't do in life to have too many regrets. If you haven't done it yet, then there's always tomorrow.

:)

I wish when I was a kid my Greek grandfather had spoken Greek to me, so I could have learnt it, and been fluent. I am crap at languages, and having another fluent language is something I would really like.

I wish I had become a Shrimper earlier

The minimum hours is 45, but just about no-one manages that. (The younger you are the quicker you learn.) The best time to learn is before you learn to drive; learning to steer with your feet (differential breaking) instead of hands is surprisingly difficult! The average number of hours is probably 60-65. All in you're looking at about £8,500.
