Not a great comparison. Planning permission was finally granted in September 2007 and they were playing there less than 4 years later. Don't know if you've been there, but it is a superb stadium.

The Goldstone ground was demolished in 1997, there was plenty of times they would have said "it will never happen".

Indeed when they got it finally agreed they were in within 4 years, but that doesnt mean they had no hurdles to clear.

The point I was making is just because things are uncertain for us doesnt mean it will never happen.

No I havent ever been to the new ground, but it does look superb. Lets hope we can be as proud of a ground in the years to come, one with 4 sides even.

I am guessing you are younger than me.

I am also going to guess that you will get frustrated when people are sitting on Mercury with a Pina Colada and transmitting their opinions on the "new" stadium and how the latest development should be ready in time for the home fixture against Alpha Centauri.

I hope you are right.

As long as they don't bring their 'boys' it'll be OK. Mind you that last game away to The Moon lacked atmosphere.

Having just read the comments on this thread, it all sounds very worrying to me.

In fact, its beginning to sound like Chairman Ron has cocked up the stadium project.

Maybe he should just stick to running a football club ;-)

Blimey where have you been the last 3 years :)

Heyyy, don't take too much notice of my frustrations. It is what it is.. and my concerns hold are pretty much without knowing facts.

The Boy Arab sounds uber confident which is good. So, maybe my frustration is all unfounded.

However, I went through a quick list in my minds of clubs that have proposed, got permission for.. and ultimately built their new stadium in the time since Southend United first launched proposals. It is astonishing how many have achieved their goal (pun) in a fraction of the time we have talked, read and argued about a new stadium.
That is what has led to my concern.
People have mentioned BHA as though it should give us hope?? They had to go through much more and higher obstacles but still managed to get the stadium in much, much less time than us.
Go through the list of new stadiums ....why could we not do that??

Hopefully Arab man is the one in the know and may be able to shed some light on why oh why are we the slowest builders of anything ..since Gaudi!??? !!!!

I think some of it lies in greed and need. It can be reassuring getting into bed with the likes of Sainsburys but remember they will call the shots. The pace of a project will suit them and not be influenced by anything beyond their agenda. A smaller company may have pushed quicker out of greed or need but ultimately that may have been more perilous. One other issue which I keep harping back to is the council. Many other new stadia have been built in the decades we have been trying and many of them have had uber aid from their local council whereas ours, imho, have been neither use nor ornament. Add these factors to the current global recession and I think RM has probably performed near miracles to keep us in existence let alone get promoted. No I am not his love child.

I wouldn't want to diminish the angst Brighton supporters must have gone through with all the years of ground sharing and other adversity thrown their way. In fact Brighton and Charlton are the two clubs whose supporters have done most to successfully overcome near terminal situations.

However, the fact remains that 4 years after planning permission was granted they were occupying a fantastic stadium. Over 4 years after ours was granted, the derelict wasteland that is Fossetts Farm looks as derelict and wasted as ever.

Both clubs have a property developer in charge. I wonder how different things would be if Ron Martin were Chairman at Brighton and Tony Bloom was at Southend. Hypothetical, of course.

Yes well Tony Bloom is of course fantastically wealthy. He invested £93m!

And Tony Bloom has family connections at Brighton and is a fan himself.

Any wealthy Southend fans out there?

Indeed thats the big difference, they had the ability to pay for the stadium yet still took 4 years.

Ours has taken 5 already due to financial problems. Question is can they be overcome ?

Nail on head.

Bloom took over Brighton because he was fantastically wealthy.

Ron Martin took over Southend because he wanted to be fantastically wealthy.

Oh well, the best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft a-gley ......

Exactly. Bloom was already a successful property developer. Ron wanted FF to be his success.

An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

I believe I am right in saying that SUFC has never had an owner as wealthy as Tony Bloom and nor have many other league clubs. Are you suggesting that ownership of clubs is only for the mega-wealthy and those that aspire to more should stick to corner shops? There are plenty of instances in league history where the rich owners got it wrong too.

No, I just think people should know their limitations and not get out of their depth.

My concern is. You agree a deal for Roots Hall with a major PLC. Five years on..that deal has not changed.
Sadly, the costs invoved in building FF and world economy crisis make it all ...rather different!

Here's my prediction for next season ...

Fossets Farm building work WILL start before the winter this year.
Freddie will sign
I have met Ron a couple of times and he cannot be happy with the long ball gane so my last prediction is we will go back to playing the ball on the ground.

My 20 quid bet is already on for promotion.

My prediction sturrock could be gone by xmas
If we not challenging. Martin banked everything
on promotion this season letting sturrock sign eveyone
including resigning his son. His ego is so big though would he sackhim
