What were Southend doing

Oh dear, I wish I hadn't looked this up now! The day after I was born we lost 3-2 at Peterborough leaving us 22nd in the Old Old Div 3, November 1975.

However, my first Christmas was cheered by a Boxing Day 2-0 win at home against a team from somewhere called Col******r (didn't know they had a club - anyone else heard of them?). Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose...

The day before I was born we lost 2 - 0 away at Cheter (26th April 1986) the first game I was alive for we trashed 5-0 at home and followed that up with a 2-1 win at home over Port Vale.

Well as I was born on 27 July 1979 there wasnt a lot of football to be played. Nearest I can get was a 2-1 Home win vs Bentford 18 days later....

I was born on Wednesday 15th April 1987

On the 14th we had a Tuesday night fixture, we lost 1-0 Hartlepool (a), two bad days for my dad there

However one i was born the mighty Shrimpers dispatched of Aldershot 2-0 at home!! ooo to be a Shrimper!!

The game closet to all my birthdays follows (which bday, and the date of game):

1st Birthday, game played on the 9th April : Lost 4-1 at home to Sunderland
2nd, 14th April : Won 2-1 at home to Reading
3rd, 14th April : Won 3-2 at home to Rochdale
4th, 12th April : Won 1-0 at home to Tranmere
5th, 15th April : Drew 0-0 at home to Port Vale
6th, 14th April : Won 3-0 at home to Brizzle Rovers
7th, 16th April : Lost 3-0 away to Watford

9th, 13th April : Lost 2-0 away to Crystal Palace
10th, 12th April : Drew 1-1 at home to Bradford
11th, 13th April : Drew 0-0 at home to Gillinghma
12th, 17th April : Won 3-0 away to Plymouth
13th, 8th April : Drew 0-0 away at Rotherham
14th, 14th April : Drew 2-2 away at Exeter
15th, 13th April : Lost 2-0 at home to Shrewsbury
16th, 12th April : Lost 1-0 away to Bournmouth
17th, 17th April : Drew 2-2 away at Northampton (Great OG)
18th, 15th April : Lost 1-0 at home to Orient

We have never won ON my birthaday, but our record on the 14th aint bad, 3 wins an a draw, we play on the 14th this year.

My home record is good, we are home this year!!

Bring it on Gillingham!!

My birthday is always closest the second round of the cup and the closest one was Northampton losing in a replay '86 (3-2), after drawing on 5th 4-4!

On 9th February 1974 (2 days after I was born) we beat Port Vale 1-0 at home.

My daughter made a rather dubious start to her Southend supporting life, the day after she was born we missed out on automatic promotion away to Grimsby last season. However she hasn't looked back since and is on course for 2 successive promotions before her first birthday (6th May)!

The day after i was born, we won 2-1 away to Halifax on a Tuesday night - at which point we were top of the leauge (2 points clear) in the 85/86 season.

I suspect like my Dad the team were watching England beat Bulgaria 2-0 in the 62 World Cup in Chile on a squitty black and white telly.

"You have a beautiful son Mr Suffolk Shrimper Senior". "Hold on, Jimmy Greaves is just going to take a corner nurse".:(

Aahhhh, Corner Nurses, haven't see one in ages - whatever happened to them?

Saturday, February 9th 1957.  Brighton and Hove Albion 1 Southend 1.  Didn't manage to get to  the match because I was born too late to catch the flight from Addis Ababa to London that day - my Fair Weather tendencies started at birth, obviously!

That may seem a not inauspicious day to be born, it being only four weeks after our victory over Liverpool in the FA cup (even better, a match made possible by thrashing Col******r 4-1 at Layer Road in the first round) but wait, that league table with Southend languishing in 16th place..... Who is that top, two points clear..... Aaaaggghhh!!!
mad.gif

But wait again... The end of season League Table... and Col******r miss out on promotion by ....... ONE POINT - to Ipswich!!!

A great season to be born after all!

In order to rid my mind of the sight of octagenarian grannies parading at half time in skimpy nike clobber I bring you a run down of the players birthdates for all you statos;-
Shaun Goater 25-02-70 was sandwiched between two losses away to Port vale and Exeter, the Shrimpers losing 3-0 at both matches.
Daryl born 28-11-78 and was born in between a fine FA cup win over Peterborough United winning 3-2 before a 0-0 draw away to Exeter the following Saturday.
Juppy, 25-01-75 was born between  a 0-0 draw away to Grimsby and a 1-1 draw at home to Preston north End.
Che (17/01/79) was born the day before the Blues travelled to Blackpool and lost 1-0.
The day before Spinner was born (22-04-71) The Shrimpers lost at home to Cambridge United 2-1.
Adam Barret (29/11/79) was born between a 1-0 Facup away victory at Wealdstone and a league away win at Barnsley of 2-1.
Gower(5/10/78) was born following a 1-1 away draw with Wallsall and a home win beating Blackpool 4-0.
Maher 17/10/76 was born after the blues drew at home with Col******r 0-0 and then the following Saturday travelled to Rochadle and again drew 0-0
Wayne Gray born on lucky 7th of the 11th, 1980  between the Blues losing away to Swindon 1-0 on the Saturday and then followed this by a 1-1 at Plymouth Argyll.
Petts (22/3/81) was born the day before a shocking 3-0 away defeat at Wimbledon, when Wimbledon were a real football club.
Bentley born on the 7th January 78 was born on the same day that the Shrimpers lost to Derby County 3-2 in the FA Cup
Mitchell Cole (06/10/85) was born between a 2-2 home draw with Tranmere and a 3-1 away win at Aldershot.
Luke Guttridge was born on the 27th march '82 and the day before that Southend beat Sheffield United 3-1.
Lawson was born on 27/10/87 and the day after The Shrimpers travelled to Chesterfield and were roasted with a 3-1 loss.
Eastwood was born on 29/10/1983 the same day as the blues lost to Bolton wanderers away by a 2-0 deficit.
Efe Sodje (5/10/72) was born with the Blues sealing a 2-0 win against Shrewsbury.

Players i've missed are probably because they are born out of season, and therefore, of course, are not true southend supporters.

Unfortuanatley that includes Tilly 27th july 66  :-o
However Paul Brush was born 22/02/58, the same day as when Southend beat Bournemouth and Bosecombe Athletic 2-0 at home.

...
there....

.....it hasn't worked, I can still see grey haired blue rinsers high kicking in the centre spot.

I was born on 14th September 1970, so the closest game to that was September 11th. T'was an English 4th Division league encounter at Roots Hall against Bournemouth & Boscombe Ath. We lost 1-2 and remained 4th from bottom.

The teams below us were Barrow, Brentford and Newport County.

No close game to my birthday on July 5th.... although we were formed close to that date!
