I've been in need of a new winter jacket for a while, and after a couple of weeks looking on the internet ordered a North Face coat for £240. Yesterday it arrived, but the box seemed awfully big and unneccessary. I opened it to find they'd sent me FOUR coats!

I checked the email order & delivery confirmation and sure enough they both said quantity 1. I'm going to check my bank account today and leave it a week to see if North Face realise, then I was going to try and sell them for £70 (inc £10 donation to movember).

Overnight though my conscience kicked in, telling me I should let them know. I guess I was brought up to do the right thing and not want to get in trouble. Would returning them bring good karma, or is them sending 4 my good karma after a tough few weeks for me (see suicide is painless thread)?

What does SZ think?

I usually work on the theory that if I haven't paid for something its not mine and therefore I would have no satisfaction in owning it. . I would tell them you have 4. The cost and time spent for them trying to collect the other 3 might not be worth the effort, as they would probably have to sell them as returns, in which case they may say keep them. If they do, you can then do what you like with them and have a clear conscience.
However, I would check with them straight just in case they have charged you for all 4.

Same here. Give them a phone call and point out their mistake, and that you could have been dishonest and not bothered. They'll probably be very grateful and arrange to collect them and hopefully give you something to recognise your honesty.

Friend of mine's oldest is at Coventry Uni and he found a wallet with £120 cash in the other day plus an ID card. He could have kept it, some of his friends encouraged him to, but he knew the right thing was to hand it in.

In both cases I think it depends on your own conscience. I know I couldn't have kept the wallet or the coats.

Keep them.

They could come in useful next time you need to employ the services of a lookalike.

If you do decide to sell, send me the size details and a pic and I might be interested. Personally, I would probably return them in full or perhaps say you been sent an extra one. That way, everyone's a winner!!

Sod conscience, sell them. Also ring them and tell them the jacket never arrived and get them to send another one.

Let North Face know, but you shouldn't have to go out of your way at all to return them.

Alternatively, give the other three to some friends and you can walk around the place pretending to be a BBC TV crew,

To be honest this is just confirming what I was already thinking/feeling anyway. I'll have a look at the order confirmation email later and see if there's a point of contact on there. Would prefer to email, calling them seems a bit too much effort for correcting their **** up.

I regret buying a North Face jacket now. Half the over thirties commuting to London wear them.

I wish I had stuck with Berghaus now.

In both cases keeping the items is theft. Although I have just seen this on the National Mail Order Association website:

If you ever receive an unordered item, you may feel obligated to pay for it or return it. Don't. If you didn't order it, and it isn't being sent as part of a negative option or club plan, you can keep it for free. If you are billed for merchandise you did not order, advise the company that unless it can demonstrate you ordered it, you will treat it as a gift. If you have any questions about unordered merchandise, the FTC website offers details at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/products/pro15.shtm

The big caveat being that this is an American website.

Well I emailed them, and they've already replied. They're picking them up on a date & location convenient to us, and say they're investigating it. No mention of any kind of reward, I know I shouldn't expect anything but if it wasn't for me being honest they'd have just lost £720 worth of stock.

They should definately give you a reward, a lot of people wouldn't have been so honest and they should understand that!

You mean £720 at retail prices. It's probably nearer £100 to them.

I would doubt this as they are worth £720 to them in retail.

If however, they would have to sell them as "returns", they may well tell you to "throw them away"

Either way, tell me and see.
