In honesty I wouldn't take him now. I think we have enough in forward positions and we're in danger of signing people that will never get a game. I'd wait and see what the season brings - if someone gets injured we may need to get a loan in - keep the wages free for that.

I remember someone saying that football contracts are for 12 months + and that Fagan's deal on his old one hasn't ended yet? Or something to that effect?

The theory ishis contract expired on 30/6 and players get 2 months after, so if thats the case then he will be getting paid for another month yet.

Its certainly possible thats still the case.

His wages are so silly that every week we don't sign him saves us a few grand?

If he was here for a month on Gillinghams pay then it would save us at least £4,000 and probably mean an extra couple of grand in his pocket as well.

I think he gets paid by Gills for two months regardless of whether he is also paid by us. If that was not the case...nobody would take a wage cut and sign for a lower division club until after August.

I dont know either way but I wouldnt be surprised if that payment is subject to them still being out of contract.

Either way, doesnt sound like Fagan is on the cards at all.

Ok fine, but why play him in friendlies then ?

I suspect initially we were interested, but over the weeks probably struggled to negotiate acceptable wage demands, and then we spent a few quid on Bolger, and that was that.

Maybe we weren't certain of getting Worrall in? Bringing Coulhirst in also means more cover up front if Weston needs to play wide

I would loved us to sign him, with the obvious experience and quality he would bring to our attack. With the two new and young strikers that we've just brought in his experience would have been really useful. But I suppose we have to draw the line somewhere.

Update on Craig Fagan in this story about Steve Keane.

I work with one of his family, and know that they are still based in the Southend area whilst he lives and works in Brunei - he never received any formal offer from us by the way.

The injury that he had was a really bad one, so from a Southend perspective it's probably just as well that we didn't sign him, though if he stayed injury-free he would be a simialr type of player to Hunt.

I am surprised that club like of Great Wakering Rovers, Canvey Island etc didn't snap him up as part time would suit him.
