Question What are you reading?

Been working my way through a few books recently. The pick probably being The Northern Lights trilogy by Philip Pullman, all excellent reads and imo opinion better than The Lord of the Rings books with either The Subtle Knife or The Amber Spyglass being the best.

Also despite trying to avoid them for some reason have now managed to get into Terry Pratchett books, so far think The Hogfather is the best mainly because Death is a great and funny character.

Pratchett - Mort is the best. Others pale in comparison.

HDM seems a bit heavy handed with the religion for me, but that's the personal opinion of someone who tries to stay in Switzerland when religion comes up. As a fantasy novel, it's magnificent though.

Kind of agree, but just looked on them as another element or just another name for one of the warring factors.

On the Terry Pratchett front must admit have only read three so far and in no particular order, The Hogfather, Moving Pictures and Men at Arms.

Just read 'The Woods' by Harlen Coben, my favourite crime writer. Great plots (although I did work out most of this one) and much funnier than most. I've almost read all of them now. How will I live?

I've only come across Harlen Coben recently, he's very good.
Have you tried Michael Connolly or Mark Billingham? The first Mark Billingham novel Sleepyhead is being shown on Sky on Sunday.

James Patterson: You've Been Warned, Private, Postcard Killers.
Susan Hill: The Vows of Silence
Truman Capote: In Cold Blood
Stephen Fry: The Fry Chronicles
Frank McCourt: Tis

Non-academically, I've been reading the 2nd and 3rd in the Skulduggery Pleasant series. Cracking novels, but one small complaint: Less of the cliffhanger endings please Mr Landy! I'm only a student, I haven't got much cash and when I'm already 2 books back on the series when there's another 4 planned and about another billion books on my "To Buy" list, cliffhanger endings do not help!

As for the academic stuff, just a bunch of text books, study guides and the like, although I guess I'd best get round to reading The Collector by John Fowles and First Love, Last Rites by Ian McEwan.
Ian McEwan is a Yawn!!! Try Snow Falling on Cedars by David Gutterson - far more entertaining!

Just finished 'The Scarecrow' having read 'The Poet' a while back. A good read but Coben is more fun. Haven't read Billingham - I'll give him a try.

Hoping that the new Rick Riordan book's been put on sale a mite early when I head into Twickenham later. It's not due out til tomorrow but if I can pick it up today then I will, along with the next Skulduggery Pleasant (which, no doubt will have a bitch of a cliffhanger ending, thank-you-very-bloody-much Derek Landy you Irish ninny), Dark Days.

frightened man by kenneth cameron. plodding, and bit dull.
bad vibes by luke haines - ok in parts. pretty unmemorable unless you're a britpop fan. which im not.

now started the millennium trilogy. (i know, im behind everyone)

I didn't pick it up then (bloody embargos). Or the next day (bloody postmen). I did, however, pick it up the day after.

More please.

Same for Skulduggery Pleasant. Which I duly obliged yesterday by picking up the 5th one (it was BOGOF, OK?) along with Charlie Higson's sequel to The Enemy, The Dead. Can't say much for the latter (have to read it in daylight with the lights on - yes, I know I'm 21, it's pretty freaky ****, OK?) but the former = kick arse.

Right, suppose I'd best get started on The Collector (Fowlkes or someone I think) if I'm going to be talking about it Friday.
