The worrying thing for me is Jack looking at the rest of this team and thinking 'more of the same next season'. If Brown manages to persuade him to stay, he'll deserve a medal or at least a bottle of Ambre Solaire

Really? IMO he had a poor game himself, as did most of the team. He was certainly no better, and I lost count of the number of missed passes from the team, and him in particular. However, it was just one of those games, and we know we're a better team than that.

For me the pick of the players was David Worrall, who may have missed a couple of chances, but worked hard and showed a bit of creativity.

Hardly surprising their goal came from Payne giving the ball away needlessly-he did it so often. He only ever looked dangerous( to the opposition !) when they failed to close down short corners.Worrall as usual was extremely good and the only others to do ok were Deegan,Bentley(little to do) and Barrett's magnetic head.

I know you had a tough time Roxy and I do understand what you're saying about Worrall missing chances but he was the only player out there that we could see who was genuinely giving 100% throughout the game - including when he got changed to RB. You don't need to justify your choice, I know you always try to come up with a fair decision.

We are at the point of the season where the results are at their most predictable. Across the country teams that have something to play for (promotion or relegation) will more often than not get a positive result against those that haven't. Human nature being that the intensity/effort levels will undoubtedly be higher for the former - and whether we like it or not - its a fact of life. You can't really judge players or managers in situations like we find ourselves in now - and if you do you can often 'throw the baby out with the bath water'.

As they voted for Payne, someone who knows nothing about football (insert PB joke here). I like Payne a lot but he was nowhere near MOM last night

Roxy knows her football, and I think her companions are also regular attenders. On her behalf, I'll tell you that you're wrong here, and she explained earlier...

Jack Payne was the pick of a very poor team performance as voted by our guests tonight

...how they took a decision between them on the result, which is how I've seen things done when I've been lucky enough to share her hospitality previously.

Does it really matter? I was there last night and I don't know who i would have given it to (probably Worrall).
I know the sponsors and can assure you they are Big S.U.F.C fans and not prawn sandwich brigade! Obviously they entertain clients who may not know as much as you about the game.
A friend of mine was matchday sponsor on Fred's debut! When asked for MOM they said Wayne Gray (for a laugh).
It took alot of persuading from Brian Wheeler(nervously) until they said Eastwood.

You never know it might add a couple of quid to his tribunal valuation, so it could be a good choice. :winking:

Yep, someone who knows the sponsor, and nothing about football, gets to pick the MOM. Pointless exercise

Well true to a point, but the box was all men :winking: make of that what you will!
Joking apart, they are all football guys, 50% Southend and 50% others and to be fair you do get a different view when you are watching from the boxes (nothing to do with the wine/beers!)
No harm done, and if it helps I was in the Wozza camp :dim:

That's because you know about football

Well, I didn't think the game was as bad as people are posting above.

Perhaps that is because I still have the memories of the away games at Rochdale and Blackpool in my mind and perhaps because I am being realistic about our position in this league.

If we had scored in the 1st 20 minutes of the 2nd half I feel sure that we would have gone on to victory. As it is I think some credit is due to Oldham who did play very well from the 67th to 87th minute. I am critical of the team during that 20 minute period.

It's a cliche that the 1st goal in particular can change a game and this is exactly what happened on Tuesday.

There is something missing from the overall team set-up at the moment but I think it is about the mix of players and formations - not to mention tactical nous of the opposing managers.

As for castigating certain players ........... well, if it makes you feel better then go ahead. :'(
