Anyone else find it funny that they look to be hosting the Rugby world cup there too?

Do you reckon fans will notice the difference between that and West Ham's style of play.

General football forum............

We would struggle to believe this story if it was in a TV drama..........

£100,000,000 of taxpayers money to help move a football club which is tens of millions in debt and mainly owned by people who made their money from porn and vibrators and may well be in Division Two by the time it's done

Welcome to 'Great' Britain.

There is an upside to this.

When Southend are playing some team of distant northern monkeys, I may get to attend a number of 'away' games for my second football team 'Anyone but WestHam United'. Looks like they'll be playing away at Stratford every other week so a chance to see Premier League football and West Ham losing at the same time.

edited for accuracy!

I've not read the whole story behind this. Who owns the current ground? If the Boleyn is being "exchanged" for some/all of that £60 mill then I can sort of accept it. If however, someone is making profit out of the sale of the Boleyn AND they're getting the Olympic stadium funded by tax payers, then that is completely out of order.

Personally, I agree with MIAS, should have let them ground share with Orient - proceeds from the sale of both their grounds to go towards the funding of the Olympic stadium for their use.

Good idea OBL - too sensible to be considered I expect

Its odd they get funded to go there, but this does guarantee the stadium is there for athletics (it wouldnt be affordable as an athletics stadium alone).

West Ham being there ensures it has a legacy.

I seem to be in the minority of not caring very much, think it will be a crap place for football and most West Ham fans dont seem to want it either.

As someone who loved the Olympics, and particually the Olympic park, it is in a way a bit tainting that West Ham will become tenants of the stadium. That said, it is clear they will not be owners, but tenants, and since it was always likely to be converted post Olympics (as most of the venues will/have been), it is good in a way that someone at least will be renting it for 22 days a season, and hopefully the Stadium may run at a profit, rather than costing the taxpayer more than £60m in the long run.

I am also glad that athletics will also always be a part of the stadium, and plans to host the IAAF meeting this July, the 2017 Athletics World championships, as well as possible Rugby World Cup games and so on are also in the pipeline (also selfishly hoping it will host the 2013 ROC), so at least the stadium will get use aside from football, so it never feels like it belongs to the Irons.

Of course, Olympic stadium legacy does not guarentee a team will fill the stands. The 1992 Barcelona Olympic stadium is a lovely venue, however, Espanyol eventually ended up moving to a smaller stadium in 2009 (not sure if there were other factors to the move?)

I bet the Golds are loving the prospect of selling the land Upton Park stands on once when they go and rent this new stadium.

Ring any Bells anybody?

A club in debt looking to get a new stadium they don't own which is being mainly being paid for by someone else and selling off the land where the old stadium is?

Nope doesn't ring any bells :whistling:

Hopefully the rent they are charged will do to them what is happening to Coventry and send them broke and into administration and then into lower leagues SEL sounds about right for them :smile:

Why is it that West Ham are receiving £60m of government money in order to convert the Olympic Stadium for their use?

This is bad news for us. If, in August 2016, kids are given the choice of either watching League 2/1 football at our place, or hopping on the Southend Vic line to Stratford to watch (possibly) Premiership football, most likely for less money, which are they going to do?

We could of course be in the Championship by then, but that's pretty optimistic!

What are people's thoughts on this?

With the amount of kids for a quid games West Ham already provide this option is already available for those on the central line.

One of the bigger issues I have a problem with, and I'm not sure of the veracity of this because it's coming from Barry Hearn, but apparently the £2m rent that WHUFC will be paying doesn't actually cover the costs incurred in terms of security, policing and other costs incurred by bodies other than WHUFC. Hearn was mentioning that because of this the council will actually incur a loss, and if that is indeed the case then there absolutely should be a judicial review.
