Born to it - my uncle took me to my first game aged 6 in 1958 - 53 years later I still can`t shake the Blues off :winking:

Thats correct, when we played Orient in the 80's for the first time in decades, there was no real rivalry. That has only reared its head over the last 10 years when we've played them on a more regular basis. You will probably recall that in the mid 70's, Brighton, Watford, and to a lesser extent Cambridge were all viewed on the same level as our local rivals. Colchester never came into the equation, as we took over the town every time we played there, and they never showed at Roots Hall to generate a 'derby' atmosphere.

Remember the Watford rivalry of late 70s very well
The team I first took a strong dislike to was Leeds and still remember my 8-year old self being delighted when ColU knocked them out of the cup. Forty years on I don't think a ColU giant killing would provoke the same feeling. Just goes to show how rivalries can chnage or develop over the years

Born in Old Leigh. 1st time I watched SUFC was 1959/60 at home against Accrington Stanely we won 6 - 1 that was it I was hooked.
Went every week one week to watch the first team then the following week which would be the reserves, I think it cost a shilling. Money well spent.
