Ref Watch Wembley Refwatch .......... Oldham

Hadn't seen him before but wasn't impressed considering how highly he is obviously rated by those doing the fast tracking. A good number of his decisions were questionable at best, inconsistent at worst and one or two downright perverse. However I'm not sure I'd agree with your "Oldham shirt" comment although in the first half he did seem to find it easier to award Oldham free-kicks than us. We could have had a penalty, yes. So could they before the one they got. Miley's caution, from viewing it on the TV in the concourse at half-time, looked justified - certainly not a shocker.
Thanks Mick. I always appreciate your view given you've actually bothered to qualify. As it happens, these days I now compare your thoughts (when you dare to voice them) to my son's who has also qualified as a ref. It's good to see you pretty much agree with his assessment this time.

On a general note, I would point out that in 3 appearances at Wembley we've been denied a penalty:
  • Against Crewe (can't remember who it was) but the ref denied us what the commentators said looked pretty much a certain penalty. Apparently the ref only gave us 2 free kicks in the entire match
  • Against Wycombe when Barry Corr was pushed in the back by Joe Jacobson
  • KAF against Oldham
Surely sometime someone will award us one!

I'm surprised there has been no mention of the Oldham foul on Bonne. Looked shocking from where we were. Anyone feel that should have been more than a yellow?

If I've understood the law correctly:

A foul is when the player is careless.
A yellow card is when a player is reckless.
A red card is when a player uses excessive force.

I would argue it was more a yellow than a red, especially as I think (having not watched it again and basing this purely on memory and seeing it from the other side of the pitch) that Bonne launched himself into the air. Quite impressively I might add!

No, it was nasty and cynical but we didn't think it was a red.

For me, a nasty cynical foul, where there is no attempt to play the ball, should always be a red - taking one for the team. It might act as a deterrent then. A yellow means that the cyclical teams just rotate who takes the yellow so no one gets two. I would also give a red for a blatant premeditated hand ball which stops an attacking move - and not just for denying clear goal scoring opportunities.

It looked like a premeditated assault with no chance of winning the ball designed to stop Bonne getting away. Red every time in my book - a deterrent to stop the cheats.

When you think that Hopper got the same punishment for blocking the keeper kicking the ball out, as a reckless challenge, it's a bit of a joke; though I don't know what the answer is, unless we start bringing in sin bins

That was an interesting one, gk took ball to very edge of pen and when he went to kick appeared very very near the line, with Hops close and getting some of the ball which had been released. Soft decision and debatable if there was any offence, is it on highlights?

I don't think referees are allowed to red card someone as a deterrent to others. I don't think that's how it works. It might have been cynical, but it wasn't premeditated. That implies he decided before the match he was going to do that. Mind you, you'd make a great lawyer!

Obviously a hypothetical question, but how much effect did the change of ref have on the players? I know I thought "thank god, maybe we'll get some decisions now" when he went off - maybe we'd have stuck to the task better 'up against 12 men'?

Sorry but how can a bloke from Liverpool be allowed to ref a game like this when one of the teams comes from Manchester! Surely too close? What was he watching when Hopper was being manhandled every ball up there? How did he only get 4 mins added on at end of extra time? Oldham celebrations alone were probably 4 mins each and that clock didn't stop for these!
I think Oldham would have more cause to complain on that score. Scousers hate Mancies, and vice-versa.
