Wayne Gray

He started the season well but for the last couple of months he's been lacklustre at best. The past couple of games have seemed to see a Gray revival, and we look much the better for it.
In your opinion. Great stuff. I think he is a superb player and his pace is electric and he has done well all season.

Blimey in my opinion he even got close to being man of the match
I don't know why you have been slagging him off anyway. You obviously don't get to many games. He has always been a quality player.
I can understand people having negative opinions of Wayne Gray at times. From what I've seen of him over the past couple of season's, he's the sort of player that is sometimes up for a game... and sometimes not.

When he's up for it, his pace is electric... he looks a real handful and seems ready to bust a gut for the club.

When he doesn't look up for it, his pace is really off for an ex-runner... he falls over at every given opportunity and is mentally lagging.

On my last trip, I saw both versions. At the MK Don's game I saw the latter Gray. As the games went by, the former description began to creep in to his game, culminating with the Oldham match where he was a very tricky customer.

One thing's for sure. Good or bad... he certainly knows how to bury a penalty.

thats one thing he is good at - dont recall him ever missing one (guarenteed to miss the next one now though!)

His last "open-play" goal was against Yeovil back in September - about 18 games

That is possibly Wayne's best performance in a Southend United shirt, that I've witnessed anyways. Long may it continue.

Excellent point there. No matter how rose-tinted SOTW2003's glasses are for Gray, as a striker he really does need to hit the back of the onion sack more regularly from open play.

He missed one playing for the reserves earlier this season.

Ball went over the roof of the North Bank Stand and was found in the grounds of Southend High School I think!!!.

I think with Wayne its all about confidence and against Brenford he was flying. Must be so hard for him when he does have an excellent game and outshine Freddy for the crowd to still be signing Fredys name. Do soooo wish we could find and sing loud to the rafters a unique song for him.... and then watch his confidence grow and more performances like the Brenford one.

Wyne was gaggggging for a goal today, getting the ball into feet, turning and running at a demorolized deffence. Goal difference could play such an important part at the end of the season and here we were at the end with an ideal opportunity to really rack some up.. imagine what it would have done to Brenfords confidence going into the rest of the season on the end of a really good thrashing. Sorry for being negative.
To rest him for the next match?

To reduce the risk of injury considering he had been singled out a few times?

To get the Goat some time on the pitch after returning from injury?

We won 4-1 you know

Take your point on resting Southendsleeper, but he's got a whole week to rest and Wayne didnt look like he wanted the game to ever end to me while Brentfords 10 men with 2/3 of their support already on their way out were only going through the motions. There were definately more goals in the bag today and if we loose out on auto promotion or a playoff place by one goal especially to Brenford come May...... we might live to regrete today.
I've seen a few pathetic posts in my time on this board...but this is the worst. We beat Brentford who are immediately below us in the league, we outplay them in every department and rightfully deserve at least a 4-1 score line, and you say 'we might regret today' Pure stupidity! If it does come down to 1 goal i'm sure we could cite many more oppurtunities to score that 1 goal, almost lost for words! Even if we won 7 - 0 we might miss out on 1 goal, then you'd say we shoulda won 8-0? You've surpassed all idiotic posts on this board wth that beauty IMO.

Wayne certainly played better today than he has been.

He did well getting the ball and laying it off , far better than recent matches when his control was letting him down.

However he still isnt as natural a goal scorer as Id like.

Taking him and Freddy off to give Shaun and the new chap a run out was a good thing for me.

If you cant do it when 4-1 up vs 10 men when can you....

And I have seen some pretty pathetic and lame replies to posts but this one exceeds and leaves all before it in its wake.Where as I'm estatic at the four goals we scored and fully appreciate the nature of footballs twists and turns during a season the fact is, at the end, we let a poor and demorolized team off the hook and if we want to catch up on Swansea's superior goal difference then in games like this we must go for the jugular. Perhaps your being ' almost lost for words' could be an indication of your own obvious stupidity.

How is beating somebody 4-1 letting them off the hook? It doesn't make sense?! We didn't revert to 10 men behind the ball or anything! We were playing two capable strikers in place of 2 others, also could you have guaranteed that Wayne Gray would have scored ANYWAY? NO! We got the goat some badly needed match fitness back and gave a promising youngster a morale boosting few minutes on the pitch when the match was tied up, the same we did with Lawson last season. So first of all you don't even know if Gray woulda scored which is not likely to say the least, plus we swapped him with the Goat not really weakening our front line is it you pillock, some fans honestly! Just ANY excuse to moan! If you wanted to moan why not do it when we LOSE instead of our best display of the season?
