The other point is who had heard of players like Bentley, Eastwood and Hunt? The reaction to each signing was underwhelming to say the least but I'd far rather Tilly sign someone on the basis of what they will do for Southend, rather than what they did for another club a couple of seasons ago.
Good point and well made! e.g. Graeme Jones!

Last year was a promotion season, though! Imagine what it will be like this year if we're mid-table or bottom half!!

Bentley - signed mid-season
Eastwood - signed mid-season
Prior - signed late on during pre-season

Others like Pettefer and Hunt were signed on the back of loan deals, after the player came in mid-season and impressed.

This all suggests that the best time to sign players isn't in the mad recruitment rush between the season ending and pre-season starting.

This seems to be a pretty reasonable and well balanced view and I agree with it to a point.

Tilson is after a striker first and should get one before the season starts I think. He is currently looking at a couple of trialists too, so it's not all doom and gloom at the minute, but with a bit of patience from us all, Tilson & Brush will come good.

They haven't let us down yet!!!

I don't know if its a serious suggestion, but gretna are trying to bankroll themselves into the SPL within wo or three years so they won't be selling.

At the start of Last season Inverness Caley Thistle had just won promotion to the SPL, yet one of their players (ok not a first team regular, but he had still been offered a contract) chose to sign for Gretna beacause the money was better.

allegedly , the chairman made a bet with a mate a few years ago that he could take gretna into the SPL and he is throwing money at it to prove a point.
I believe they are planning a 12000 all seater stadium........in a town with a population of around 6000 ! sheer lunacy

Yup. In one. A few years ago they were playing in front of 350 in the Jewson Screwfix league in England.

I'm afraid this is a sad and sorry tale about the folly of one man, the size of his ego, and (presumably) the limited size of his bank account.

Sooner or later, his interest or his money will run out, and Gretna will return post-haste from whence they came.

It's Max Griggs & Rushden all over again, only on a wildly more exaggerated scale (in terms of size of club to size of ambition).

Buying success, unless you're Chelsea, is always a dangerous route to take. For a more local perspective, look at poor Hornchurch, whose owner tried to bankroll them into the league only to lead them to complete extinction.

Thank heavens that SUFC has more sensible owners who are willing to ensure the club is viable before splashing more cash than we can afford.
