Wanted, top striker that will play for a,

wiggy

Darryl's Love Child
Time to wake up, we have gone up a division and this club still expects everyone to play for peanuts. Fear the worst if we don"t push the boat out a bit and try to compete as at the moment Tilly and his wage restraints are looking a bit sad at this level. Do we want to progress, or happy to play a league2/conference standard of football for the forseeable future?

Tilly's wage restraints? I always thought it was the Football League 60% cap on turnover that was the key! Damn! I didn't realise that it was Tilly!! Sack him! Kick him out! Let's make sure we pay top whack for decent players instead!

Even though we can't afford it ...

Certainly not knocking Tilson. Give the bloke a chance, and a few quid to try and keep us up.

Oh look wiggys back with another slice of constructive commentary.

The last time I checked a 'six figure signing' wasn't a cup of tea and a ham roll.

If rumour is to be believed about our transfer targets, then I'm fairly inclined to agree. We do need to pay players more to play for us in this division than last year, particularly if we are seeking this big name player that the club mentioned.

That said, if we lower our sights somewhat, I don't see why we can't take more of a gamble on a striker from non-league, bearing in mind the success we've had from there in the past. This approach also has the added bonus of not tying a millstone around our neck financially.

I honestly think that the team is good enought o compete but I don't reckon the squad is. It'll certainly be interesting to see how we get on if we still have no signings and we're entering the season.

You should think your post through before posting it look at all the angles and see that the long term financial future of the club, may come a tad higher on the agenda then any six figure gamble on a player!

I would doubt Eastwood could do it on his own virtually again next season, a bit of new help is not asking too much is it?

No not much to ask for BUT at the right price!

The same restraints apply to other clubs though - clubs who are signing players, who are paying decent wages and who possibly didn't have as a high a turnover as our successful season netted us. Thats the point.

Its not my point though I trust Tilly and RM to bring in the right players at the right price for the club. Just because we can spend 60% of our turnover on wages doesn' necessarily mean that we should.

But the wag cap is not based on last seasons turnover but the figures in the audited accounts ( it was all in the accounts thread of some weeks ago)

Our location will have something to do with the wage demands as well. A Northern based player will likely require (and from what we have heard about agents be instructed to demand) a higher wage to move away, especially to an area with higher house prices, cost of living etc. And of course he may have the trauna of moving house etc.
(Doesn't explain Yeovils signings though, but goes a way to seeing why midlands based "Names" have gone to Boston)

BTW Dichio has been told by Claridge he can go because he is one of their top earners .......

I don't think that wiggy's post was that bad, i know we can't break the bank and hand out silly wages but i'm just curious as to how other smaller clubs seem to be doing this at the moment.

A six figure fee for a striker is ambitious but if you can't back it up with decent wages then maybe we are dreaming if we think we can attract a ' big name ' as such.

Hopefully i'm proved wrong, but i'm not holding my breath.

People are moaning about the fact that we haven't signed anyone yet when they should be recognising the fact that the players we've been linked with or have had talks with are all quality players, and thats in terms of L1 quality not the division we've left behind. I'm delighted we're looking at players like Dyer, Harris, Goater, Greenacre, Owusu and IMHO Beckett. Sooner or later we'll get a couple of our targets and if they are of the same standard as those mentioned we'll do very well next year.

I'd be FAR more worried if Tilly/Brush had brought in players who were clearly no better than we already have, the fact that they have recognised the calibre of player who can continue to take this club forward will be of massive benefit to SUFC.

Doctor Kenny Deuchar!! Such a good call. Jeff Stelling would give us so much time - imagine Kenny playing for us against Hartlepool - it would be the featured game on Soccer Saturday!

Look when Tilly has made a number of his key signings:

Bentley - signed mid-season
Eastwood - signed mid-season
Prior - signed late on during pre-season

Others like Pettefer and Hunt were signed on the back of loan deals, after the player came in mid-season and impressed.

This all suggests that the best time to sign players isn't in the mad recruitment rush between the season ending and pre-season starting.

The other point is who had heard of players like Bentley, Eastwood and Hunt? The reaction to each signing was underwhelming to say the least but I'd far rather Tilly sign someone on the basis of what they will do for Southend, rather than what they did for another club a couple of seasons ago.

But I would suppose there would be far less choice out there during the season? on the other hand you would be able to see how players have performed in early season clashes like with Eastwood at Grays.
