Ref Watch .... Walsall

Yep at the match. Quite frankly I expected to be reading a lot of posts anti-Styles and was most surprised to see people saying how good he was. The first half I thought he was very poor. Decision not to award Betsy a freekick in front of East Stand when he was wrestled to floor was poor. He gave us a freekick about 30 yards out only after our player (possibly Macca) was on floor and Walsall player kicking ball against him - it was a foul way before that. He (and others here) would say he was playing advantage but I didn't see any. Sorry, yes I was at the game and can't agree he had a good game at all. Only an opinion.

When Rob Styles was warming up and jogging past the East Stand, a lad with Down Syndrome cheered him sarcasticaly, to which Styles stopped, and shouted to him "keep drinking that coke, you'll get fatter than you already are".

****!

What part of the East was that?

An absolutely first class performance from Mr Styles today. He coasted through the game looking to let play continue whenever possible, but took firm action when necessary. I'm sorry, but anyone who was unhappy with his display really hasn't got a clue about refereeing.

Agreed. He got one or two decisions wrong and missed one or two things too, and could have shown one or two more cards (eg to Grant when he blatantly blocked a breakaway). But he can't have 360 degree vision from every angle and we won't agree with every decision. Was in the right places, clearly commanded respect, let the game flow when possible but had words when needed. Hard to think how he could have had a better game. Was a pleasure to watch a good referee for once.

Can't remember the last time I saw the referee get a prolonged applause for a decision he made. When their left winger dived, and it wasn't as obvious a dive as some that we've seen recently, we thought "Here we go again" as Styles blew up. Seemingly another referee conned by a dive. But he rightly blew up to get out his yellow card. Excellent.

He's a t**t and he will spoil the game I'm sure. An arrogant, useless, high and mighty t**t.

There's probably a Wallsall fan agreeing with you somewhere. I thought he was one of the best refs I've seen at the Hall for some time.

Agreed. I was also impressed with the way he delayed a lot of decisions to see what happened just in case there was an advantage. He seemed to time it just right aswell, unlike the guy that gave the free kick to Crewe...

Mr Phillips in the Echo falls into the above category. No better than most of our players with his mark of 7.

Interestingly the commentator on The Championship seemed to blame Macca for a "two footed challenge". Given his back foot was two feet behind his front one and flat on the ground, I'm not sure how he came to that conclusion.

The issue for me over giving Styles a rating of any sort was if you made it high, did that make him MotM? Yes, I was very happy with him but I couldn't give him a rating higher than our best players on principle, sorry!

But you didn't give him higher than our worst player !
