My thoughts on tonight.

Bentley looked assured after a shaky first 10 mins, though he had a totally unrecognizable back four in front of him.
Auger is a decent back up at RB
Bennett looked strong and powerful at LB
Thompson? (worth a pont) and Barker both looked good at CB
Cowan is strong and powerful but is he injury prone?
Clifford. Tough tackling, breaks play up well. Sign him up
Timlin - Didn't see too much of him
Payne - this pocket dynamo needs to start games this season. Awesome all action display tonight box to box with plenty of skill and vision. Very Jack Wilshire
Corr - Lots of huffing and puffing, some good flicks but a bit of petulance and could easily have been sent off in a league game
Eastwood - No energy, no effort, no vision and no skill. Needs to be offloaded if he doesn't pull his socks up

Couple of tweets from CP

Brown on trialists: "We're close to signing two of them and not so close on the other two."

Brown: "One or two will be signed in the next 48 hours and we want to get up to the embargo limit we have of 20 before start of season."

First game of the season. Dont usually do pre season games but glad i went to the Hall tonight.

Thought Clifford looked well worth a punt tough tackling and determined.
First i had heard of the young blond centre half think his name was Mc Carthy well worth another look
Cowan We could get better
Corr MOM
Auger Very impressed
Barker Typical Chis Barker Gives 100%. The question is How many games will he be able to play and not sure his
legs have not gone, but good performance tonight.
Bennett Remined me a bit of Chris Barker. A real solid lump Not sure he is fit or mobile enough. Although his reading of the
game first class.
Timlin Was a little of the pace

Thanks chapz. so target is 20. Basically again as you were not much change. No positivity there that Embargo is clearing soon. Wonder if the two trialists that'll sign is the same two quoted beneath. Maybe 3 down on what he said before the game.

Just two decent signings in the next 48 hours would be welcome news. Forward is a must leaving one other.........midfielder for me.

Think it'll be two trialists signing on lee. Just feel Brown has slightly webbed himself up being a bit too wordy. 2 trialists better than nothin but i still feel maybe as for the better signings pressure is being put on Ron by brown cunningly to get those deals sorted. but his quotes doesn't say anythin about embargo being cleared other than to say there workin within embargo limitations.

If they have coughed up why can't they do it sooner? Instead of the last minute.

I'm going to guess it's to do with the fact that we shouldn't be asking them for money every five minutes. Probably why they're reluctant to give us money and who can blame them when there's no guarantee it'll come back.

glad i asked as you learn something new every day.

Game was quite flat compared to Friday's, however midfield and the forwards seemed to link up better. I would like to know why Corr's flick ons didn't work until the 2nd half - it still concerns me that he and Freddy don't seem to have any kind of understanding of how the other plays at all.

Yet again, we had some mistakes from Bentley, one of which almost cost us and one which Auger hoiked off the line. Barker also saved his butt several times with very important blocks. If it had been Smith in goal, people would have been baying for his blood. However, for all that, he made some excellent stops too.

Ryan Auger was one of our best players on the night. He's a full back that seems to know how to both attack and defend, and I don't think we put a decent cross in until he did so in the 2nd half. Adam Thompson, in particular, and Julian Bennett both acquitted themselves well, Thompson looked very assured in the air. I just am not sure we would need both of them. Chris Barker, bless his cotton ones, had a stonking good game, yes he'd probably admit his legs aren't as good as they were but boy did they get worked. He was absolutely everywhere, making challenges, commanding in the air and blocking extremely well. Personally, I would definitely keep him involved, there is still life in Barks yet that can be used to our advantage.

Timmo as captain was a good move and I fully expect him to be announced as club vice-captain in time. Some of his passing was off (not sure if that was as a result of being around too many WH supporting co-prisoners or not! :winking: ) but he showed his importance with his speed and determination in the middle. Clifford didn't shine as much alongside him as he did against QPR, Chris Phillips apparently said that Clifford reminds him of my old mate Macca on his first loan spell here - and that should be good enough for us! Jack Payne was the star of the show though, it was a joy to see him get a start and he took the opportunity with both hands. Skilful, quick, agile...the boy seems to have the full package, wonder how long it will be before a bigger club comes knocking. I still have yet to see anything in Cowan that suggests to me we should be offering him any deal.

Corr seemed to make heavy work of heading to begin with, I'd have expected his wily ways to work their way around an inexperienced defender but it took a while for him to start coming out on top. He battled well on the ground, and who knew he had a free kick like that in his locker? :stunned: As I said right at the top though, concerns me that him and Freddy have no rapport. Freddy put himself about better than Friday but still not very successfully.

Of the subs, Pinnock did well, can't really comment too much about the others as I got quite confused with who was who!

Of West Ham, the only player for me, that seemed to have anything about them was the number 7, but he was working their right side frequently against Barker, and obviously Barks' legs weren't a match - although he blocked him several times, making up for the lack of speed.

I too am slightly woried about Fred but I hope that there is an explanation such as Brown telling him to "play safe" and not get a knock or injury - at one point in the game against QPR it looked as if he had hurt his foot while shooting. Other than that I think he (Fred) prefers the competitive games and will be sharper and more involved come 3pm on Saturday.

Here's hoping anyway. Fingers crossed.

One wonders what may have been said during the game?

Everyone seems to be playing around with figures at the moment. Am I assuming correctly that the two players, hopefully being signed in the next 48 hours, will actually take us up to the embargo limit of 20...........or do we have a little more leeway? PB's statement appears to me to be a bit ambiguous in that respect.
