UFO's...

UFO's...

Yeah, that was a great film!
Scary but good!
Most of his town just thought he wasa nutter though!

I still think to this day that it's probably the scariest film I have ever seen, although I haven't seen it since I was probably about 7 or 8, so I'm not sure that if I saw it again if I'd still feel that way!

If there were other lifeforms, why would they want to communicate with us? Our world's constantly at war, we're destroying our environment, our entertainment is reality TV, and we make idols of drug addicts. Personally, I'd stay well clear!

And that may be precisely why UFO's have supposedly been seen but no concrete proof exists that contact has ever been made ;)

a) I was 9
b) I had 2 adults (of reasonably sound mind, if you knew my Mum, you'd know what I mean) telling me they thought it was a UFO
c) surely the vastness of the universe must support some other forms of life somewhere or other (we can't really be alone!)

I wern't having a dig at you!

Looking out the window now do you really think that there is another place full of trains and people on another planet?!

Thinking about it objectively I cannot for the life of me believe that out of all the trillions of planets in the universe that we are the only one capable of sustaining an intelligent life form
Exactly. Given the size of the universe, it is almost inconceivable in terms of mathematical probability, that we are the only sentient life forms in it...

Space, the final frontier...

:D

However, you need such major ingredients for lifeforms to exist. Not only mus the make up of the environment be amenable for habitation, including breathable air and food for nutrition, but there also must exist minerals to use for construction, and building an efficient habitat.

Added on to this, the life forces need to evolve to suit their habitat, evolve their intelligence to communicate with each other, and evolve to avoid extinction.

Furthermore, if they are to be discovered, they need to be interested in extra-terrestrial matters, and be on the same wavelength as us (literally)

Sure, mathematically, it's possible. But a cynic like me believes that on Earth we really, as a human race, have been incredibly lucky with our environment, our evolutionary progress, and our curiousity.

However, I'd like to believe, ever since I saw Flight of the Navigator

Of course 'Unidentified Flying Objects' exist!

Everything that flies has the potential to be 'unidentified', for a while at least!

 :p

I am firmly of the belief that "we are not alone", as mentioned elsewhere in this thread it is unlikely that amongst the billions of stars, planets etc that Earth is the only one that has lifeforms.

After all you can't tell me that Ian Dowie is not an alien.

Does anyone remember a US series called Project UFO?

I used to love it when I was a kid.

I very much doubt that there is another planet that has life on it. Life as we know it is pretty much based on oxygen and water. What is the probabililty of those two compounds occuring in the correct quantities to create and sustain life? Given the amount of elements etc that we know of the chances are probably billions and billions to one. I would wager that those billions and billions roughly equate to the number of planets in the universe.

That's not to say I don't think that other planets haven't at some time had life on them, just that they don't now. There is (slim) evidence of life on Mars, but it seems from my laymans view that it didn't take hold, i.e. it didn't evolve.

I also remember seeing a TV programme about some amazing lights in the sky near some American City. About 10-15 really bright white lights appeared in the night sky and just hovvered there for about 10 minutes until they all sunk into the earth. People were convinced they were UFO's and even went as far as to video them. Some people even rang the local airforce base who said there was nothing on their radar. People were even more convinced once they heard that.

The programme makers set out to prove that these were UFOs but soon realised what had happened. Apparently that night some hikers were reported missing in the local mountains and the mountain rescue lit flares to light up the search area. It was these lights people had seen. One of the videos used to "prove" these UFOs was then superimposed on another one taken from exactly the same place during the day time. This showed the flares sinking behind the mountains rather than into the ground.

I guess this proved to me that there usually is a simple explanation if people can be bothered to work it out.

Generally not having a clue about science, all I do know is that those are just two of the elements required for human life to exist. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in a scientists world, a plant can be concluded as life. Plants require carbon dioxide to exist do they not? Over time things change, things mutate. Diseases mutate, the kind of thing what scientists are currently worried about now with bird flu. We have thousands of breeds of dogs now too as they have evolved. Who's to say over time they couldn't find a whole new way to communicate with humans. Maybe over time, humans will develop a sixth sense, who knows....

Personally, I still think we are hundreds of years away from finding out (and I'll be dead before it happens), but I just cannot fathom out how you can have a planet/universe/galaxy so so huge, and with us the only inhabitants. Doesn't make sense to me. There must be something out there IMO.

Unless they learn how to stand on two legs, their vocal cords will never be advanced enough!

Another advantage of man's luck- we have the right posture to enable us to use our vocal cords to produce an array of sounds to produce language. Which is entirely different to sound/communication. If we do find another species, I'd be amazed they had anything like a language.

Oxygen is an element not a compound.

Water is Oxygen and Hydrogen.

Earths life is based around Carbon Oxygen Hydrogen and Nitrogen

Ok, forgive my extremely obvious lack of knowledge on the science front, but the gist of what I said is the real point I was trying to make; that the probability of having the right chemicals in the right quantities to create and sustain life must be billions and billions to one, which may well equate to the billions and billions of planets in the universe.
