TV Sets

I pondering whether or not to get a new TV set to replace my 28" Chunky TV, and started looking around as I know things have moved forwards somewhat since I last looked into TV's.

Ideally I am after a bigger screen (is there an optimum size? Is 37" fine or should I go for the biggest I can get) and better sound than I currently have which is just a tinny sound from the TV somewhere!

Anyway, I just wondered if any of you have any hints/tips/suggestions as to what I should be looking for? Oh and preferably not something which costs an arm and a leg!

Cheers

we have a 37inch plasma panasonic viera... it is brilliant. excellent screen and brilliant sound. from what i can gather there are difference between plasma and lcd (plasma have better blacks but also suffer screen burn so not good if you play a lot of games and pause them)

My LCD's suffered screen-burn which I am particularly annoyed about as I did a lot of homework prior to purchase and thought I'd minimised my risk!

blimey... did you leave it on pause or something?

i've heard some stories about panasonics but personally ours has been brilliant and not a single problem after about 3 years

Personally, I blame the flickering signal from my Sky+, see last week's thread!
It's just coming up for 3 years old and is for want of a better term, knackered!

Amazon of all places seem to be doing some good deals at the moment, so might be worth a look FS.

I've been toying with this little lump for the main bedroom.

I'll probably buy it this week unless someone convinces me there's better out there for the dosh.

John Lewis are very good for TV's. You get a 5 year guarantee from them as part of the purchase. Recently got a Samsung 37" LCD from them and very happy with it.

If you want the 5 year warranty then you cannot beat John Lewis who give it to you free. Of course when shopping on the internet you get fantastic prices at first but add the 5 year warranty and you will see that John Lewis more than matches those sites.

I have been considering getting an LCD but must admit I have not seen something that does justice to football matches, they all seem to suffer a little too much bleeding/blur/fuzz for my liking.

I am considering the new Toshiba Regza Z series which has not only got true HD 1920x1080p but also refreshes the screen at 100Hz rather than the more standard LCD 50Hz. Although JVC are trailing 180Hz TVs - so I just might wait a little longer.

Regarding size - to be honest biggest is not best unless you are going for a projector, as the bigger the screen the further away you should be, as LCD do not scale upwards very well and pixelation can be seen close up. There is a chart that you can use to determine the optimum screen size for the distance you will normally be seated from it.

Of course if you want a big screen then you could go for a Plasma but they tend to use as much as 3 times the amount of power a similar sized CRT would use. So not good if you have an environmental conscience.

Sound - no TV can really give you the ideal sound, for this I would get an AV solution with the necessary 7 speaker setup with Dolby Digital or DTS. Although a word of caution I have this type of audio and Jess does not like me using it once the kids get to bed but for watching movies it is the nuts.

Also you should upgrade your TV services to High Definition to take advantage of what your TV can bring. Otherwise in my opinion you get a slim TV and a bigger screen but the picture quality is no where near as good as a CRT when dealing with Standard Definition signals.

60" is the way forward.

Only if you sit over 12 feet away from the screen

The size of the LCD TV screen that you finally choose will determine the quality of your viewing experience.

Picture quality can be lost on larger screen sizes when displaying standard terrestrial or satellite television broadcasts. We therefore recommend that you actually see the picture quality for the screen size that you are considering prior to making any purchase. However, be aware that many TV showrooms deliberately show DVD and HD programmes on their LCD TV screens so they look at the best. Do therefore ask to see a normal television picture.

High Definition broadcasting services are currently being provided by Sky and VirginMedia on a subscription basis (learn more about HD TV ).

Most people buy the largest screen they can afford, however there is an optimum screen size for any viewing distance.

The formula for calculating the optimum screen size is dependent on the minimum and maximum viewing distance from the television.

We have simplified this calculation by creating our own visual guide which is displayed on this page.

Well according to this site it is not a bad TV for the money, and the price at Play, why not but it does seem to have issue motion, so your footie matches maybe best to be viewed with your glasses off ;)

Don't forget that John Lewis are 'never knowingly undersold'

Last christmas I got a Sony LCD from Waitrose (Southend). Shelf price was £795. Discovered that PRCDirect (Romford) were selling exactly the same model for £635. Told the salesman at Waitrose and he price matched after looking at PRCs website - 5 yr warranty still included (worth approx £200 and Domestic and General Insurance Company)

I think there is a new Which? report out on TVs this month (check the local library for Which magazine).

I'd also second AVFORUMS as an excellent resource.
