Trialists

Ranger yes..Timlin was a loanee from Fulham. Don’t think he trialled- might have been training with us before the loan was announced.

Barks was playing pre-season games for us as a “triallist” but the deal was already agreed. As said in original post sometimes players are with training or trialling but actually the deal is done but there is a reason to delay announcement or actually sign until a certain time (normally contractual/financial)

I think the original poster was getting at something else by trial........maybe involving judges and juries

It was a pun

Anyone remember we had a player called Stéphane Pounewatchy on trial, turns out Ronnie Whelan didn't sign him due to his lack of fitness and love of food (over indulgence).

Carlisle signed him and was their player of the season...
He’d have been fine if it was drinking and not food

More trialists

I always loved it when a completely random trialist would turn up who was a completely unknown quantity.

Michael Husbands instantly springs to mind. There was some real hype about him after he’d displayed the ability to break the sound barrier on foot.

Leke Odunsi. Thought he looked to have the makings of a great player. Can still hear that snap 20-odd years later.

We've had loads on trial - David Roche, Nile Ranger, Michael Timlin...

Tesfaye too. Although his trial for Prison United FC came after he’d finished his playing days with us.

it was that pre-season friendly at Roots Hall v Gillingham I seem to recall

Gary Deegan was a trialist, although we signed him after the season had started so not sure if there were some early injuries in CM?

Did we have Darren Currie on trial towards the backend of his career?

One I remember us missing out on under Sturrock was Izale McLeod who went to Barnet instead and scored 32 goals in 68 league games over two seasons.

The thing with Tes Bramble was he was either very very good or he was c--p , there was no inbetween .

I seem to remember a young player Yemi Abodubin or a similar name who was on trial then signed by Alan Little. He looked at first like an exciting signing and played in the first league game of the season but soon disappeared down the pecking order. Maybe someone can confirm this.
