Cashman would be a very interesting signing.

He’s the type of player we want to attract: the most talented players at the level below. We want to become seen as the destination of choice for the cream of NLS/NLN; somewhere where players can express themselves as we nurture talent, play football and provide the off field support to help progress their careers.

Ideally we’d become a sort of all stars destination for lower level players frustrated about the level of talent around them and who want to play with players who can look after the ball as well as they can. Opponents of Slough/Weston-super-Mere/Dartford etc would have looked enviously on at the likes of Parillon, Morton and Husin every time they played them and the ballers would have thought how great it would be to play alongside someone of their quality.

Not sure what the vision for Cashman would be exactly and where he’d play but he’s a player playing below his level. I wonder how much that’s because of his off the ball work (or lack of) as the highlight reels shows a player who should be much higher and you can see that pedigree (Eng u16, u17; Brighton). Often players get recognition because they are early developers and are just bigger than the other kids but that’s clearly not the case with Cashman!

Is that actually true or was it more a case of not knowing if we'd ever be in a position to sign him whilst the rat family hung on for dear life and we were under an embargo?

For clarity, I can't remember so am asking a genuine question.

He didn’t choose a big wage, he was on a big wage already that we couldn’t get close to

Jayden Clarke might be an interesting one. A wide player that came through non league to get a move to Gillingham and has played a lot in League 2 this year and grabbed a goal or two.

I'd like to think Will Davies of Sutton might be one within our reach possibly?
Age 25, 26 on 7th June.

19 goals last regular season in all competitions, would have beaten Gus lol.

A proper no. 9 who can lead the line.

If soccerbase is accurate: 57 league appearances and another 13 off the bench and 30 league goals. a rate of .42 goals per game.

I think we have looked in the past too?

Am not in the know, but I am sure there are loads of players that we would have signed (and they would have wanted to sign for us) before last season that probably couldn't due to the various embargoes and the genuine threat of us going under.

Best to draw a line under it and look forward to either our return to the EFL or our NL Championship push next season. Never forget the past but let's move onwards and upwards.

I do like Alex Reid but isn’t he 29 now? Need to be looking at players yet to reach their peak IMO.
I don’t know what Alex Reid is like as a player, but to make a give a general point about the age thing, surely we need a few players who are already on their peak to improve the squad?

I always find it interesting to hear what people have to say re balance here.

I think in a squad of say around 25 you want 10 (or around 40% if you want to argue overall squad size) ‘older’ players as such for the dressing room, to lead, to have that guile on the pitch.

I haven’t looked recently. What is our current make up of young vs old?

I think you are right if we are in the NL. But IF we were in the EFL would not NLS/NLN be replaced by NL? Back to the two whiteboards I guess…Not to say Cashman couldn’t make that step..

What’s old varies from position to position, depending on the physical demands.

I’d suggest Bridge, Miley, Husin, Hopper, Bonne (and Moncur, Waldron) and probably Walker are all past their peak. Their performances have already dipped from their peak year. That doesn’t mean they can’t contribute but we shouldn’t expect them to be quite the same player as they were two or three years ago. They may play more reduced roles and their roles may change (eg Noor dropping back to DCM).

Gus, Ralph, Taylor have likely peaked. They probably won’t be as good next season as they were this season but they’ve been very good this season.

Goodliffe, Morton, Kendall should be in their peak years and playing their best football next season.

Parillon, Coker, Crowther, KAF, Wind, Hayes are approaching their prime in the next season or two. They should be contributors now and we can hope they can still improve and take their game up a notch between now and then.

Golding, Gubbins and Collin have a few more years to go to reach their prime. They all play positions which tend to take a little longer to develop and relies less on pace and more on reading the game.

When we’re in L2 I’d expect us to continue to recruit heavily from NLS/NLN. There’s a lot of talent at that level because its pretty much the highest level you can rise to whilst maintaining a non-football career and it means players probably hang around an extra year.

But once we get promoted that would open us up to recruit more of the better NL players as well (Bromley signed Dinanga and Kamabe when they went up) so it would widen our recruitment pool. Of course we’ve already tried recruiting NL stars (Dan Mooney).
